Above all, his detachment from material things reached the level of him eating only what fell from trees and bushes. He later realized that the middle way was the right way to go, without extreme food deprivation, for example.

And when he decided to accept food from a young woman who believed he was a spirit, he was abandoned by his followers. For they interpreted that Siddhartha had given up the purpose of following a path of enlightenment.
