As the daughter of Oxalufã and Nanã, she is the sister of Ossaim, Omulú-Obaluaiê and Oxumaré. The five make up the sacred family of Yewá.

The story of Ewá Orisha

THE Orisha Ewá is recognized for its purity, sensitivity and gift of clairvoyance. However, these are not its only characteristics. Its very exotic appearance draws everyone’s attention, as it is also a symbol of sensuality and beauty.

although the Orisha Ewa be remembered for her beauty, she kept herself chaste. Therefore, she is also protector of all things considered pure and virgin, including humans, rivers and forests. THE Orisha Yewá it is worshiped in Umbanda and Candomblé, being more common in Candomblé. The main force of this Orisha is present in Nigeria, and in this country there is even a river called Yewá.

There are many stories about Yewá, the most famous of which is that the Orisha has cheated death several times, so she does not fear death. This story, with the fact that she is the ruler of fog and fog, makes some people believe that the Orixá inhabits cemeteries, since these places are covered by peace and keep Xangô and Ifá away.

The Orisha is also seen as a warrior woman who possesses great wisdom. Traditionally, it usually only rises on women’s heads, so it only manifests in female children of saints. Between the symbols that highlight this Orisha are: the harpoon, the Ofa, the lyre and the snake.

Yewá and death

There is a legend of ewá tells us that the Orixá was washing clothes on the edge of the river and noticed a man running in desperation. At the same moment, she threw the clothes out of her giant trough (igba) and hid the man inside. Ikú (death) appeared next and asked Ewá if she saw a man running, it was then that she calmly replied that the guy had gone down the river. Thus, Iku went after the Orisha’s false trail and the man was able to leave the igba.

When he came out of hiding, the man said his name was Ifá and since then he has been in love with Ewá. After this happened, Ifá would have taken Orisha to marry her, but she didn’t want to, because she wanted to stay pure. They say that Yewá learned the gift of clairvoyance from Ifá.

Ewá and Oxumaré

There are several legends about Ewa and Oxumare, with one of them saying that Oxumaré helped her sister get rid of marriage. Legend says that her mother Nanã longed for her daughter to marry, however, the Orisha wanted to focus on protecting purity. It was then that Oxumaré took Yewá to the end of the rainbow, where they lived together for a long time.

Because of this story, Ewá and Oxumaré are considered the energy of the rainbow. The Orisha also came to be called Ewá Fagemywhich is the same as “rainbow lady“.

Ewá in Umbanda

As already mentioned, Orixá is worshiped in Umbanda, but it is traditional in Candomblé. Ewá syncretizes Santa Luzia, which is worshiped in Catholicism. This is because the gift of the Orixá is precisely clairvoyance, while Santa Luzia was the patron saint of people with vision problems. Both also chose not to be married and are able to see the different paths to the soul.

How to worship Ewá?

Orisha Yewá does not accept offerings with chicken. To make an offering to her, you must prepare the ewa foodwhich is made up of the following ingredients, materials and assembly.

1. Ingredients

Black beans sautéed, black-eyed peas, boiled and chopped sweet potato, boiled corn, dried shrimp, cubed cooked coconut and chopped plantain.

2. Materials

White candle and bowl.

3. Assembly

Put the ingredients in the bowl in small portions. Mix everything, put the white candle to the side and salute the Orisha.
