The story of Saint George – the warrior

George was born in Palestine. His father was in the military and died when he was a child. As a teenager he followed his father’s career and became one of the best soldiers at court.

In the year 302, the emperor ordered all Christian soldiers to be arrested and the others to offer sacrifices to the Roman gods. Jorge protested, claiming in front of everyone that he was a Christian. In order not to lose such a valuable piece in his army, the emperor tried to convince him to convert, offering him land, gold and money. As the soldier showed no interest, the emperor tried a different approach, torturing him in various ways. Miraculously, Jorge emerged unharmed from the tortures and was then beheaded.

In the beginning, George came to be venerated as a martyr, but at the time of the Crusades, his image was improved and associated with the dragon, which represented evil and the devil.

When we think of the great fighter, we immediately think of a soldier mounted on a white horse, with a red cross on a white background, facing a dragon with his sword. Let’s understand the story of Saint George, the warrior.

Legend has it that George passed through a village in Africa, which was dominated by a terrible dragon. He charged two sheep a day so as not to destroy the village and then began to demand a human victim.

One day, luck decided that the king’s daughter should be offered to the monster, and when she was already reaching the dragon’s meeting, George arrived, wounded and tied the monster’s mouth with the princess’s belt. The two were taken to the center of the village and all the residents converted to Christianity in gratitude.

In 1969 the Catholic Church tried to remove Saint George from the list of saints, but there was a lot of revolt and Pope Paul VI allowed him to continue being celebrated by the faithful.

In addition to being the patron saint of several countries and cities such as England, Catalonia and Rio de Janeiro, São Jorge, the warrior, is also the saint of one of the most popular football teams in Brazil, Corinthians.
