Know who are the Brazilian witches

Before we see everything about Brazilian witches, understand the main difference between witches and wizards, which is very confused these days:

  • Witches: they are those who live by the precepts of the Craft of the sages;
  • Sorcerers: are those who practice magic.

Brazilian Witches – Mima Renard

The first case of witchcraft in Brazil is reported in 1692. Mima Renard, a Frenchwoman who came to live in São Paulo, was persecuted and burned in the public square after a series of accusations.

Her story is very tragic. Beautiful, she caused the envy of many men as soon as she arrived in the country accompanied by her husband, René Renard. The fascination was such that they planned René’s death, leaving Mima a widow and without bulhões (currency at the time), to support her.

Helpless, the Franco-Brazilian witch lost all her life structure and went to live in a brothel, the only way she managed to support herself. This measure pleased the men of the time, precisely those who plotted the death of her husband, but it started to bother the wives of those who frequented the place.

The presence of Mima Renard was not well accepted by several women. They went on to accuse her of witchcraft and that she would be bewitching the men of the place. It was said that she had the power to make their husbands fascinated by her beauty.

At that time the Church exercised important power in the population and Brazil followed Portuguese law. Faced with the accusations of witchcraft, Mima Renard was tried, convicted and executed in front of the population. She was burned at a bonfire in the city of São Paulo.

Brazilian Witches – Maria da Conceição

Another victim of the witch hunt movement was the Brazilian Maria da Conceição, in the year 1798, in the city of São Paulo.

This woman was famous for her extensive knowledge of medicinal herbs. Always using this well-known asset of hers to cure the sick, but for unrelated reasons Maria da Conceição and a priest at the time, named Luís, had a disagreement.

This little problem between the two was taken to crucial levels and the priest denounced her for practices of witchcraft and heresy. And, again, following Portuguese law, another Brazilian witch was tried, convicted and burned alive at the stake in a public square.

Brazilian Witches – Ursulina de Jesus

Another Brazilian accused of witchcraft was Ursulina de Jesus, she lived in the city of São Paulo and was convicted in 1754.

Ursulina’s story is devastating. Her own husband, unable to have children, accused her of having stolen his virility.

Still under Portuguese law, she went on trial. Her husband’s mistress testified against her, a situation that complicated her life and ended up condemning Ursulina to death. She was burned in the public square.

After her death, her husband formed a new family with his then-lover. However, to this day there is no report whether or not they managed to have any children.

Brazilian Witches – Fabiane Maria de Jesus

Years passed, Brazil became independent and we started to have our own laws. The Church today does not have the same legal weight that it had in the past, but that does not stop cruel acts from happening.

The last report we know comes from the city of Guarujá, in São Paulo. In 2014, Fabiane Maria de Jesus was accused through rumors of kidnapping and executing children in black magic rituals.

Fabiane’s neighbors revolted and beat her, even without any official proof of such crimes allegedly committed by her.

Fabiane Maria de Jesus was tried and convicted, without defense and without veracity of the facts. She died on May 3, 2014, at age 33, assaulted by over a hundred people.

Understanding Brazilian witches

Being accused of witchcraft became a common act between the 16th and 18th centuries. In Brazil, there were more than 29 victims accused of witchcraft, including men and women.

The cases of Brazilian witches are too sad, but, thanks to the mental evolution of humanity and still a lot of struggle of these people, the lives of these young women, women and ladies who have avid knowledge about the world itself and still make it a way of life, it’s getting better.

This improvement is due to the tolerance that is more noticeable and thanks to the continuous struggle to incorporate new cultures.

We can see this tolerance with the emergence of the first Holistic Free University, making the world see that in fact they were never bad, but misinterpreted.
