The Origin of the Beltane Sabbath

In this article, we are going to talk about Beltane, which is a good time to renew your energies. Therefore, this is a celebration that refers to unity, protection, essence, trust, commitment and fertility.

As Beltane emerged in the northern hemisphere, it represents the farewell to winter. At that time, it is as if the Earth was “embraced” with the heat of the Sun. In this way, we celebrate the union between the Goddess and the God, which brings us fertility for crops and animals.

What is the symbology linked to Beltane?

  • In this case, the name of the sabbat comes from the Celtic God Belenus, which represents fire and light. By the way, it is a time to exalt the union between the sacred feminine and, also, the sacred masculine.
  • already the fire pit it concerns the sacred flame, in addition to the purification and transmutation of the fire element. Therefore, the tradition of “jumping the bonfire” is a request for the fertility of desires, as well as the removal of bad things.
  • During the Beltane Sabbath ritual, we celebrate the sacred marriage. Thus, we have the union between the athame (the phallus of God) and the Cup (the womb of the Goddess). In this way, we ask that the coming months be full and abundant.
  • Finally, we arrive at Beltane mast, which represents the sexual union that leads to fertility. After all, it is much more than a piece of wood decorated with plant branches and satin ribbons. In this case, it is a phallic symbol that refers to the virility of the Horned God. In other words, it is the phallus of those who will sow and fertilize nature and also our dreams.

For those in the southern hemisphere, Beltane is celebrated on October 31st. For the northern hemisphere, the celebration is held between April 30 and May 1. It is worth remembering that the seasons are not simultaneous, due to the Earth’s translation movement.

In other words, the incidence of the Sun happens differently between the north and south of the terrestrial globe. Therefore, we have distinct dates of solstice (early summer or winter) and equinox (early spring or autumn). And no matter where you are, feel free to celebrate the wheel of the year.

How about celebrating Beltane in your own way? To do so, check out the grand rite and also a pre-ritual option.

The great rite of Beltane

First, let’s go to the ritual that unites the feminine and masculine principles of all creation. That is, the complicity between the forces that bring us life, which are the Goddess and the God. Thus, the union of the couple is represented by dipping the athame in a cup or cauldron with wine.

In addition to the athame, with cup, cauldron and wine, you will need 1 wreath with flowers and foliage and 8 green candles. In parallel, separate: grain alcohol, colored fruits and 9 branches harvested from different places.

Without further ado, let’s get to the step by step:

  1. First, place the cup in the center of the altar, with the candles around it, as well as the fruit;
  2. Then draw the magic circle and invite the Goddess and God to fertilize nature;
  3. Start lighting the candles, expressing the desire to ward off the “cold” and everything that is bad;
  4. At this point, raise the garland and say that it is a sacred circle of rebirth. Immediately afterwards, place it on the altar, so that the cup is exactly in the gap of this garland;
  5. When lighting the cauldron, do not forget to mention the flame of Bel and the purification of fire;
  6. Then, place the branches straight into the cauldron fire, calling the energy of summer;
  7. Next, jump over the cauldron thinking about purification and, with that, make a wish;
  8. While holding the chalice in your left hand, pick up the athame in your right. With both elevated, ask for the union of feminine and masculine to fertilize the Earth;
  9. Finally, dip the athame blade into the chalice. Drink this wine honoring the gods and eat one of the fruits making a wish. By the way, don’t forget to sing and dance to finish the rite, ok?
