Would you get an intimate tattoo? Clear your doubts about this controversial procedure

After the controversy generated by the revelation of the tattoo that the singer Anitta made on her anus, several doubts arose about the risks related to the intimate tattoo. To solve these questions, the specialist tattooists Tatiana Alves and Thamires Barbosa answer the main doubts about this procedure. Read on!

What is an intimate tattoo?

According to Tatiana, the intimate tattoo is an art made in the intimate regions of the female and male bodies. For Thamires, places closer to these regions of the body are also included in this type of tattoo.

Where are intimate tattoos made?

The designs are made in regions such as the groin, genitals, breasts and anus. The female region called “mount of Venus” or “beetle hood”, as it is popularly known, is also a region indicated by Thamires to perform the procedure.

Intimate tattooing is more common than it seems, especially when the procedure “is performed on top of the cesarean scar, to take the attention away from the scar, or to repair the nipples after the mastectomy”, explains Thamires.

Top questions about intimate tattoos

Next, check out the answers to the main questions about intimate tattoos, as well as recommendations and contraindications pointed out by professional tattooists.

Does the intimate tattoo hurt?

According to Thamires, “Pain sensitivity varies from person to person, but as intimate tattooing is done on a very sensitive area, the procedure can hurt as much as tattoos on other areas of the body.”

The specialist also adds, “I do not recommend the use of anesthetics without being in a specialized medical clinic”.

What are the risks of intimate tattooing?

Tattoos on these areas of the body can suffer much more from heat and humidity. That’s because they spend most of their time covered by clothes. According to professionals, these conditions increase the proliferation of bacteria, increasing the risk of infection.

For Tatiana, the places that are less prone to infections are the breasts and groin. The genitals and anal area are problematic areas and need more attention.

“In the case of the anus, it can be even worse due to contact with feces. The risk of infection is very high”, says the tattoo artist.

Are there any contraindications related to intimate tattooing?

Due to the risks of infection in the genitals and anus already punctuated previously, professionals do not recommend tattooing these regions. Mainly the vulva and the lips, points out Thamires.

If you do, be careful. “After the procedure, I don’t recommend wearing tight clothing that generates friction”, says the tattoo artist, who reinforces the need to keep the region dry and hydrated.

How to choose the right professional to make an intimate tattoo?

“Always look for professionals who pay attention to biosecurity and make use of disposable materials, avoiding greater contamination. Choose a location that has a private room so you feel safe and less exposed. And always talk to your tattoo artist ahead of time, being honest about how you feel. There needs to be trust on both sides”, explains Thamires.

What care should I take after the procedure?

“If it’s a lower area on the body or very close to bacteria, you need to clean the area frequently with antibacterial soap and keep the tattoo dry. Nowadays there are products that form a protective film that can be changed, in addition to lasting until healing is complete. This helps a lot so that the tattoo is not exposed. The important thing for every tattoo to heal well is to keep it clean, dry and hydrated”, explains Thamires.

For the breast area, the recommendation to clean, dry and moisturize is the same. “Intimate tattoo is just like any other type of tattoo, take good care of cleaning and hydration. If your skin is clean and hydrated, everything is better, from application to good healing”, remembers the tattoo artist.

Can I have laser hair removal after getting an intimate tattoo?

It’s always good to remember that tattoos cannot be exposed to laser, and intimate tattooing is no exception. “When the tattoo comes into contact with the laser, the same tattoo removal effect occurs”, says Tatiana. Professionals recommend total laser hair removal of the region before the tattoo procedure or simple hair removal.

Is it possible to cover or remove the intimate tattoo?

Yes, it is possible to cover an intimate tattoo, but “the person needs to keep in mind that, in general, the coverage will be greater than the original tattoo”, warns Thamires. However, if you want to remove it completely, the best option is to resort to the laser removal procedure.
