Why Prince Charles waited 35 years to marry the love of his life

When Princess Diana died, Camila Parker Bowles became the most hated woman in England. She was blamed for the death of the “people’s princess”, for the alleged reason that if she hadn’t invaded other people’s family, Diana would have been happy in her marriage, she wouldn’t have gone out in her car that night with another man and she wouldn’t have had that terrible accident. But all is forgotten with time and the current Duchess is no longer seen as a cruel “home wrecker”. Lovers waited 35 years for her happiness, and now they don’t care if someone doesn’t agree.

how did you meet

It all started in the 1970s. At one of the parties, Camila approached the young prince in a peculiar way, saying: “My great-grandmother had an affair with her great-grandfather. Maybe we could try the same?”. Back then, Charles was an easy target for romances. He knew that, in the end, he would end up marrying the one chosen by the royal family. However, their relationship quickly developed into something more serious and Charles decided to marry her as he was in love.

From the royal family’s perspective, Camila did not have the proper status for the Prince of Wales. To try to protect Charles from an unwanted marriage, Elizabeth sent her son to military service in the Royal Navy. He was absent for 8 months and during that time, his beloved ended up marrying an ex-boyfriend, knight Andrew Parker Bowles. The couple had two children.

Married but not to each other

There was concern in the palace. The situation was critical, as Camila could file for divorce at any time and, therefore, the royal family found a bride for the prince: the young Diana Spencer, a girl of reputation and pedigree spotless.

Camila and Diana were even friends, if only for a short time. Their friendship lasted until the princess discovered her friend’s relationship with her husband. On their wedding day, the prince sent his beloved a gift, a bracelet with the initials GF (to avoid conspiracies they called themselves Gladys and Fred). This was a very clear indication that the prince did not intend to sever ties.

The wedding of Charles and Diana, in 1981, was attended by the whole world, but few knew that the prince did so at the insistence of the family. Among those who knew this was also the bride. She had already understood, even before the wedding, that this union could become the biggest mistake in her life, but refusing a royal proposal was not an option.

Soon after the wedding, Diana learned that their relationship continued, as during their honeymoon, Charles called Camila daily. Of course, this news hit the young wife hard, but at first she hid her disappointment.

To the public, the spouses behaved like a happy couple. They smiled at each other and kept up the whole show very well. But on returning home from social events where Camila was present, Diana often quarreled and made scandals.

the unholy family

At that time, the people saw what they wanted to see: the happy and smiling royal family, destroyed by Camila, unfaithful and traitor. Those who were close to the couple knew that not everything was rosy and that the relationship between the spouses was already at the limit.

Soon after, it all came to a head. A phone conversation between Charles and Camila was leaked, from which the media published several articles about their relationship. Diana gave a long interview, in which she said: “We had three children in this marriage and so it was very difficult”.

In December 1994, Camila split from Andrew, a relationship that was never particularly loving and trusting. A year later, he married Rosemary Pittman, with whom he maintained a lasting relationship.

Keeping up the image of an ideal royal family wedding no longer made sense. The Princess of Wales finally understood that her husband would never love her, so she began having an affair. Charles eventually got permission from his mother, the Queen, for a divorce.

Camila and Charles reportedly got married quickly soon after their upcoming divorce. However, Diana’s tragic death made this impossible. People blamed Camila, as if she was the “destroyer of the family”. The next day, near Kensington Palace, protesters appeared with posters, which contained messages of hate and curses. There was popular pressure for Charles to abdicate the throne.

From that moment, Diana’s image was sanctified forever. Camila now had the main villain role in this love triangle. The lovers had to forget about waiting for the wedding for 8 long years. In 2000, Charles officially introduced his beloved to Queen Elizabeth and they were allowed to live together, but Camila was still banned from attending official events.

In 2004, after numerous requests and conversations with his mother, Charles finally received Elizabeth II’s permission and a diamond ring, which was intended for their engagement.

The long awaited wedding

It was only in 2005 that the marriage that the lovebirds had been waiting for, 35 years, took place. That day, the bride was very nervous and couldn’t even get out of bed. But her sister threatened her saying that she would put on the white dress herself and marry Charles as someone needed to be the bride. Camila created the strength to get up.

The ceremony was held in Windsor. A crowd had gathered around the venue and it seemed that most Brits were already in favor of the couple. In fact, Camila’s ex-husband Andrew, along with his wife Rosemary Parker Bowles, attended the wedding party. The newlyweds spent their honeymoon at the royal estate in Scotland.

After the wedding, Camila received the same titles as the late Diana, including “Princess of Wales”. Out of respect for Charles’ ex-wife, she does not use this title and prefers to use another, that of “Duchess of Cornwall”.

Currently, in public appearances, the spouses seem to be truly happy. They look at each other with love and tenderness, occasionally smile and generally reflect a harmonious union.

The secret of happiness

Camila’s character could be described as the opposite of the term “needy”, “attention seeking” or the “unloved”, as Diana was often referred to. The Duchess of Cornwall is a mature, self-assured woman who is also independent and does not need to show her love constantly.

She has always accepted the circumstances of Charles and her life. This is of great value.

Camila managed to pause her ambitions. Even after becoming the Duchess of Cornwall and part of the royal family, she never tried to attract attention to herself.

The Duchess has time to sponsor more than 90 charities and spend time with her children from her first marriage, as well as her 5 grandchildren, but whenever necessary, she is by her husband’s side.

“She is an amazing woman and made our father a very, very happy man. And that’s the most important thing.”

How do you think the fates of Camila, Charles and Diana would have been different if members of the royal family could choose their life partners?
