“When night falls”: Gustavo Adolfo Becquer; poem and analysis.
When in the night (When in the night) is a love poem by the Spanish writer Gustavo Adolfo Becquer (1836-1870), published in the 1871 anthology: Rimas (Rhymes).
The complicit night has taken the last remains of passion on its wings. The lovers, exhausted, lie stretched out. Silence closes over the room. There is nothing to say.
Then, wrapped in that darkness, a peculiar and silent dialogue develops between them. Blind, the fingers run over the trembling skin of the other, still pulsating, to communicate everything that cannot be expressed in words.
when in the nightone of Gustavo Adolfo Becquer’s great love poems, describes a similar scenario, perhaps in the vain hope of prolonging his memory.
The world has already lost the unique colors and nuances of that night. Memory, numbed by a solid multitude of days, has buried the caresses, the bodies, and everything that was once palpable; but poetry, with its eternal and maternal piety, shelters under its bosom the echo of a feeling, the memory of a night that will never stop developing.
When at night
When in the night, Gustavo Adolfo Becquer (1836-1870)
When they wrap you in the night
the tulle wings of the dream
and your extended eyelashes
They resemble ebony bows,
to listen to the beats
of your restless heart
and recline your sleep
head on my chest,
wow, my soul,
how much I own,
the light, the air
And thinking!
When your eyes lock
on an invisible object
and your lips illuminate
of a smile the reflection,
for reading on your forehead
the quiet thought
what passes like the cloud
of the sea on the wide mirror,
wow, my soul,
how much I want,
fame, gold,
the glory, the genius!
When your tongue is silent
and your breath rushes,
and your cheeks light up
and you narrow your black eyes,
to see between your eyelashes
shine with wet fire
the fiery spark that springs
of the volcano of desires,
give, my soul,
because I hope,
faith, spirit,
the earth, the sky.
