Furthermore, it may be “due to the Gartner’s duct, an organ present in the fetal period, which usually disappears over time, but which has not evolved in some women”. In addition, the vaginal cyst may also be related to the accumulation of fluid in the Bartholin’s gland and which is responsible for lubrication”.

The specialist explained that vaginal cysts usually do not cause major complications. However, “if the Bartholin’s gland is infected by sexually transmitted infections, it can lead to the formation of a gland abscess requiring antibiotic therapy and even drainage of the gland”.

Types of vaginal cysts

There are some types of vaginal cyst that vary according to size and affected region. Therefore, the gynecologist cited the most common:

• Vaginal inclusion cyst: according to Dr. Monique, this is the most common type of vaginal cyst, being normally “caused by an injury to the wall of the vagina, which may result from childbirth or surgery, for example”;
• Bartholin’s cyst: the gynecologist explained that this vaginal cyst can develop in the Bartholin’s glands and, if inflamed, cysts can form, called bartholinitis. “Occlusion of the gland orifice occurs, as there is an accumulation of fluid and edema at the site. It is usually painless, but can become a very painful abscess if infected”;
• Gartner’s cyst: It is located in the anterior or lateral region of the vagina. It is an “organ present in the fetal period, which usually disappears with the passage of time”. However, in some cases, it may not disappear and create fluid accumulation in the region.
