The definition for ammonium thioglycolate is a chemical active used in straightening, relaxing and perms, which replaces formaldehyde. “The cosmetic cream acts internally on the strands, breaking their internal disulfide bonds, making it easier to manage and change the shape of the hair”, explains Francisca Josimeire. In addition to the action of the product, “we do the thermal realignment (use of a heat source, dryer and/or flat iron) to make the strands more aligned and shiny”, informs the specialist.

Ammonium thioglycolate is indicated for women who have wavy hair and want to have them smooth with natural movement. It is important to do a strand test before the procedure, so “we guarantee that the hair will have enough resistance to withstand the product, and we prevent any allergies that the client may have”, observes Francisca Josimeire. Contraindications are for cases of weak and inelastic threads, excess flat iron, in addition to pregnant women and children.

Thioglycolate x guanidine

The difference between the two components, according to the specialist, is that ammonium thioglycolate “needs approximately four months of hair growth to be handled”. However, in the case of guanidine “it can be applied close to the hairline”, explains Francisca Josimeire.

It is recommended to use ammonium thioglycolate in wavy and frizzy Caucasian hair, without any coloring and/or chemicals. Guanidine, on the other hand, is indicated for curly hair and its power variants (soft, medium and strong). The advantage of ammonium thioglycolate is that it is very shiny and intense, and with guanidine the procedure is faster.

Thioglycolate x progressive brush

“There is no relationship between ammonium thioglycolate and the progressive brush, but it is possible to do both types of service together”, warns Francisca Josimeire. The application of ammonium thioglycolate is definitive, but the progressive brush lasts an average of four weeks. Therefore, “the ammonium thioglycolate will change the structure of the wires internally, there will be no more waving and the progressive brush will form an external film sealing the hair cuticles”, concludes the specialist.
