#TBT Why do we post old photos on Thursdays?

The tradition is updated every Thursday, when we choose old photos to post on Instagram accompanied by #tbt, #throwback or #throwbackthursday. Despite having already seen or used the hash, do you know the origin of the term?

The custom is already quite old, at least for the internet, with the first record in 2003. “Know your meme” informs that the first publication was a post on the Urban Dictionary website, which explained the meaning of the expression associating memories with Thursdays. In 2006, the shoe brand Nice Kicks created a section of vintage sneakers, Throwback Thursday, always updated on Thursdays.

OK. But Instagram only appeared in 2010, and even then, it was only in January 2011 that the network started to support the hashtag function. According to Google Trends, the most solid records of the use of Throwback Thursday began to appear only at the end of 2011, reaching peaks in the first months of 2012.

The person responsible for popularizing the trend would have been Kim Kardashian. Is it over there posted a photo on Twitter with the term, but no hashtag. It was enough for a lot of people to join in the fun.

But, oh, there are some unofficial rules set by users: TheImages must be at least five years old; it’s not worth being from last summer or last week; and you shouldn’t post multiple photos on the same day with #tbt, for example. There are also those who prefer to use the Flashback Friday (Friday) or Wayback Wednesday (Wednesday) variations.
