She survived leukemia and decided to become a doctor to save people with the disease.

A challenge is something that forces us to go beyond what we are used to doing, to get out of our comfort zone, to try something that seems more difficult in some way. It forces us to overcome our own limits and, in this way, helps us to advance in our evolution.

O awesome.club today tells the story of Marina Aguiar, who was given up by the doctors when she was diagnosed with leukemia and now, cured, she also treats patients. Check it out!

The discovery of the disease

In 2006, during college entrance exams, Marina started to worry about frequent pains in her legs. She went to different medical specialties who believed they were dealing with psychological pain because of her preoccupation with her studies.

None of the exams showed alterations and the treatments for the pain did not work. One day, an exam showed that she had anemia, and even though she had been treated, nothing helped.

A few months later, an MRI scan showed a change in her bone marrow. Acute lymphocytic leukemia (ALL) was identified, a disease that rapidly replaces healthy bone marrow cells.

The doctor told her that if she had taken another week, she might not be alive anymore, because her cancer was already advanced. It was very difficult to go through this situation, and she just thought that she would have to put her plans aside.

the chemotherapy

She was discharged with no expectation of a cure, with only palliative treatments to extend her life. Her parents soon despaired. Then they chose to listen to the suggestion of an acquaintance who was a doctor to have another child.

save the daughter

Keila and her husband turned to IVF. It was the only viable method, as her mother had already undergone tubal ligation. The first procedure did not work, but in the second fertilization, the mother became pregnant with twins.

Everyone hoped that it would be possible to do the transplant through one of the newborns. Unfortunately, the idea did not work out. The babies were born prematurely and were not compatible.

In 2007, when she had finished her chemotherapy, Marina looked for another specialist. Hematologist César Bariani started a new treatment. This one was milder than the first and did not require hospitalization. She didn’t completely lose her hair or become extremely weak.

your new beginning

With the new treatment, she managed to finish the first semesters of Dentistry (and without failing anything!). While undergoing the new chemo, Marina decided that she would become a doctor.

His family members were shocked by the decision. They were afraid that she wasn’t emotionally ready for that situation. Even so, she was torn between her treatment and medical school.

The risk of the leukemia coming back was great. She held weekly exams, which soon became monthly; years passed and the disease never returned. Today she is considered cured, she graduated in 2013 and completed her specialization at the same hospital where she received her last treatment.

Marina completed her specialization in transplantation and plans to perform her first surgery in this category in 2020.
