Research says people with acne age more slowly

There are many things that can spoil our good mood in the morning; discovering several pimples on the face is among one of the worst. Especially if you’re planning on going out with a crush or attending a job interview or meeting, for example. But there is at least one benefit to having acne, and it might make you a little happier when those unfortunate (or not so unfortunate) breakouts pop up again.

We from the team awesome.club we also know what it’s like to be caught off guard by acne. So we wanted to share some good news to make everyone who goes through this feel a little better.

The silver lining, believe me, is that people who have pimples tend to look younger for longer. And, no, we are not referring to the fact that a face full of pimples resembles the look of a high school student.

The question is genetic and we will explain why. You’ve probably heard that acne can protect our skin from aging, but it was a very uncertain hypothesis. Thanks to some scientists, we now have something more specific to discuss. It seems that everything has to do with the so-called telomeres.

You can think of telomeres as plastic protective caps on the ends of shoelaces. The plastic caps protect the laces from breaking, and the telomeres do the same thing: they protect the chromosomes from breaking. Each time a cell divides, its telomeres shorten. And this process is linked to aging and a higher risk of death.

People prone to acne apparently have longer telomeres compared to the “lucky ones” with smooth skin. And that’s why your cells may be better protected against the signs of aging, such as wrinkles or thinning skin.

The study focused on 1,205 twins. The participants reported whether they had already had acne and how they managed to deal with the problem. Then the scientists measured the length of their telomeres.

According to the survey results, approximately a quarter of the twins used to have acne problems. And those who reported the problem also had significantly longer telomeres than other women.

The researchers warn that more studies are needed. What there is, for now, is the realization that people with acne have longer telomeres and a slower aging process. But there is, for now, an explanation for this phenomenon or a scientific conclusion about it.

But this gives us a whole new reason not to be afraid to post a pimple-faced selfie. This can be a guarantee that you will look younger than your peers in the future!

Have you ever had acne? Do you look younger than people your age?
