1. Joan of Castile (1479-1555)

This queen, known as Joana the Mad, was obsessed with her husband, Felipe. She was so jealous that she gave birth to one of her children in a bathroom, just to not let her spouse go to a ball alone. When her husband died, his coffin wandered around Castile for 8 months before being buried. During all this time, the queen did not leave him, she even embraced Felipe’s lifeless body.

2. Queen Christina of Sweden (1626-1689)

Queen Christina was one of the first women of the time to wear trousers, as she considered men’s clothing more comfortable than women’s. She studied 12 hours a day, becoming one of the most educated women of her period.

3. Philip V of Spain (1683-1746)

The king suffered from bipolar disorder, so his personality fluctuated between euphoria and depression very quickly. Once he went out riding and suffered a fit of hysteria, thinking he was going to be attacked by the sun. From that episode on, his madness reached more serious levels, and he came to think that he needed more arms and legs, and that he was a frog. In addition, he did not accept having his hair or nails cut, as he believed that this would increase his ills.

4. Elizabeth of Bavaria (1837-1898)

Known as “Sissi”, this queen was extremely concerned about her appearance, even suffering from anorexia. For a time, she only ate raw beef and animal blood, as well as cooked fish and fruit. From the age of 35, she no longer allowed herself to be portrayed or photographed, which is why she was always wearing a blue veil, an umbrella and a black fan, with which she covered her face when someone approached.

5. Louis XIV of France (1638-1712)

Called the “Sun King”, this monarch was born with a few baby teeth. The people saw this as something supernatural, claiming it was a sign that the king would not be born like the rest of the commoners. He was a long-awaited baby, after 20 years of infertility on the part of his parents, when many people already said that they would not leave descendants.

6. Catherine II of Russia (1729-1796)

Nicknamed “Catherine the Great”, this queen had numerous lovers, especially among young people. She offered them titles and offices, as well as housing in the palace. Empress Isabel, aunt of her husband Pedro III and predecessor on the throne, knew about this situation. But since her nephew couldn’t have children, Isabel pretended that she didn’t know the affairsbecause the important thing was that Catherine left descendants for the crown.

7. Luisa Isabel of Orleans of Spain (1709-1742)

The queen did not have a name until her wedding day. Until then, she was known as Mademoiselle de Montpensier🇧🇷 She suffered from bulimia and borderline personality disorder, which made her behavior absolutely inappropriate: she walked around without clothes, belched in public, appeared dirty and smelly before the court, among other things.

Called crazy, the king spent the last years of his life imprisoned in Windsor Castle because of his mental imbalances. He talked non-stop for hours, either with animals, trees or plants, scaring other people. It is believed that the monarch’s mental problems were the result of porphyria, a blood disease he suffered from.

10. Henry VI of England (1421-1471)

This monarch began his reign with only 9 months to live, as his father died and he was an only child. He suffered from continual bouts of madness, possibly inherited from his maternal grandfather, King Charles VI of France.
