Pansexuality: 6 facts everyone needs to know

Nowadays, we understand that the ways of relating and living sexuality are unique to each one of us. In this sense, we need to understand and respect each of them. Do you know what a pansexual person is? Read on and find out more about the subject with information from psychologist and sexologist Keila Oliveira. Check out!

What is pansexuality?

“Pan” means “all”. Keila explains that the term pansexual is used to designate individuals who feel sexual desire or attraction for another person regardless of the form of expression or gender attributed to them. In short, pansexuality is about relating without limitations of gender or identity. Simply, relate to people!

The psychologist and sexologist draws attention to the need we have to fit into a group, discover “who we are”. Heterosexual, homosexual, pansexual, bisexual… There are many ways of relating and expressing oneself, but the point is that none of these terminologies can explain the complexity of human sexuality.

6 facts about pansexuality

These are complicated concepts, and it is normal for doubts to arise. With that in mind, we’ve separated important information about pansexuality that can help you understand this universe. Take a look!

  1. Pansexual is different from bisexual: bisexual is someone who is interested in two genders (male and female). Pansexuals can relate to any gender, cis or transgender.
  2. Pansexuality is about people: many believe that a pansexual individual can be attracted to animals or plants, but this is a mistake! It is the desire for people with whom one can have a consensual relationship. “The whole confusion is that, as it’s a self-referential term, a lot of people will designate themselves as pansexual and add whatever comes to their mind,” says Keila.
  3. Being pansexual doesn’t mean being confused: it’s not about still deciding whether to be straight or gay. Pansexuality has to do with not being comfortable with choosing a partner based on gender.
  4. It’s not having desire all the time: being attracted to all genders is different from feeling desire for all people all the time. Pansexuals can be in a monogamous relationship and should not be seen as promiscuous because of their sexual orientation.
  5. There is much to learn: new manifestations of human sexuality, such as pansexuality, still need to be studied by psychology. Still, Keila points to an increasing trend in terms that seek to fit individuals into a group.
  6. The pansexual flag is unique: the flag representing pansexuality is made up of three colors: pink, representing women, blue, representing men, and yellow, referring to non-binary people.
