Oxandrolone: Discover Why You Shouldn’t Use It Without Indication

In search of what they consider a beautiful body, some women have been attracted, for some time now, to pills of oxandrolone, a hormonal steroid of anabolic action. The main reason for this would be the fact that the substance – which is derived from testosterone – provides muscle growth, without, theoretically, having as many side effects as other anabolic steroids (especially with regard to evidencing masculinized characteristics).

Julieta Guevara, physician and psychiatrist, director of Neurohealth – Center for Biological Methods in Psychiatry, explains that oxandrolone is a hormonal steroid with anabolic action. “It binds to the testosterone receptor, for this reason it induces muscle mass gain and masculinizing secondary sexual characteristics,” she says.

Although oxandrolone is currently highlighted for having a slight androgenic power (increase in male characteristics, such as hair, skin oiliness, etc.), the subject generates controversy. Many experts claim that masculinizing effects tend to appear, yes: deep voice, hair loss, excessive increase in body hair, changes in skin texture, etc.

Julieta explains that anabolic hormones promote cell growth and division. “Muscle and bone are primary targets of this effect, in males, whose structure has a larger size and musculature with receptors for this effect”, she says. Thus, the use of this type of product increases appetite, strength, accentuates the marking of body muscles and there is a risk of virilization in women (which includes manifestations such as temporal baldness, deepening of the voice, reduction of breast tissue, loss of feminine contours, clitoris enlargement, etc.).

But the problems of using oxandrolone don’t stop there. Below you know good reasons not to use it without a prescription.

8 reasons not to use oxandrolone without indication

It is important to note that any medication should only be used for the diseases/problems it treats, and not for aesthetic purposes. This same care goes with oxandrolone. People who want to use it as a “miracle measure” to “crunch their muscles”, above all, without medical advice, are running serious risks of harming their body.

The doctor Julieta cites the main side effects that oxandrolone can cause:

  1. In adolescents, the growth nuclei can ossify, delaying and stagnating growth (causing the person not to reach the height that would be defined by genetic inheritance).
  2. In excessive doses, oxandrolone increases cholesterol, raises blood pressure, causing hepatotoxicity (damage to the liver) and heart failure.
  3. It can induce acne by stimulating the sebaceous glands.
  4. It can also cause premature hair loss.
  5. In exaggerated doses, oxandrolone can inhibit sexual function.
  6. It can promote hair growth.
  7. It can promote an increase in the size of the vocal cords, making the voice deeper.
  8. Due to the inhibition of internal testosterone production in men, the decrease in sperm production is a consequence of the latter effect.

How to buy oxandrolone?

Julieta explains that oxandrolone cannot be bought without a prescription. “Brazilian law requires medical control and supervision of these substances,” she says.

However, it is a fact that currently drug trafficking facilitates access to oxandrolone and some people are able to consume it even without medical indication.

Oxandrolone indications

Oxandrolone is mainly used to treat metabolic problems, that is, where there is a need to stimulate cell growth, either muscle or skin cells.

Julieta cites cases where oxandrolone is, in fact, indicated:

  • Catabolic syndromes due to long-term illness that force the patient to be bedridden for weeks.
  • Burn cases.
  • When it is necessary to induce muscle or bone mass gain (osteoporotic syndromes).

Julieta explains that sports doctors, oncologists, clinicians specializing in ICU, physiatrists (to work with rehabilitation), pediatricians specializing in adolescents and urologists with a focus on secondary sexual development and its alterations are professionals who can prescribe anabolic steroids. “Hematology also makes therapeutic use of these drugs,” she adds.

Stories from those who have used it

Aline Mendes, 26, economist, says that she used oxandrolone for a period of approximately 15 days. “She was very thin and wanted a ‘stronger’, ‘defined’ body. But the side effects came and I decided to stop using it… I got pimples on my face and my hair started to fall out a lot. Currently, I think otherwise, I would not use the product again… I think we can all achieve good results through bodybuilding and, if necessary, dietary supplements… But anabolics never again”, she reports.

Liliane Monteiro, 30, a physical therapist, says that she asked her nutritionist to prescribe a substance because she wanted to “dry it up”. “He prescribed oxandrolone 2mg a day, but within the first week my face was full of blackheads and pimples. There was no way… I stopped using it and the problem is that it took more than 2 months for my skin to get back to ‘normal’ after that,” she reports.

How to stimulate muscle growth without needing anabolic steroids?

If your goal is purely aesthetic, you already know that the best way is not to bet on anabolic steroids like oxandrolone.

To conquer a more “defined” body, the first step is to know that there is no “miracle formula”, it all depends on you: it takes dedication and willpower.

By following the “traditional recipe” of combining a balanced diet with the practice of physical activities (usually weight training), you will be on the right track and, best of all: you can be sure that the results obtained will be healthy. If possible, count on the follow-up of a nutritionist and a personal trainer, as they will adapt the diet and physical activities to your needs and goals.

Whey, a protein extracted from whey and used as a food supplement, can be a good alternative for those who are looking to build muscle mass faster (as long as it is associated with a healthy diet and physical activity).

In addition to enabling faster construction of muscle mass, Whey contributes to the maintenance of muscle mass, prevents damage to muscle tissue after intense exercise, promotes satiety and promotes the proper functioning of the immune system. For all these reasons, it can be a good ally in the search for a more “defined” body. However, the ideal is to consume it only with the guidance of a nutritionist or nutritionist.
