Who is Ogun?

Ogun is an Orisha represented by a great warrior, who was also a blacksmith. Fearless and obstinate, this Orisha never abandoned his struggless. For this and many other characteristics, he became the symbol of conquests and struggles.

The Orisha is also seen as a supreme commander, as he is able to fight, win and protect everyone who turns to him. Therefore, he is the most sought after Orixá when people need to face some very important battle. That’s because he he is always willing to fight the challenges pointed out by those who seek him. Even having fury as the main stimulus to fight, the Orisha also proves to be a very loving brother. Being the eldest brother of the Orixás Oxóssi and Exú, Ogun is the son of Iemanjá and his esteem for his brothers is so great that the Orixá made the weapons of Exú and Ochosi with his own hands.

In addition to all his knowledge of battles and the energy needed to face challenges, the Orixá taught everything it takes to handle metal. So, he allowed humanity to evolve to the point where it could master metal.

History of Orisha Ogum

Like the other Orixás, Ogun has several interesting stories. The first one is about how the warrior became an Orisha.

It all started when he was called into a battle that didn’t have a deadline. Therefore, he asked his son to take care of his throne during his absence, instructing the population to be silent and fast.

After seven years of battle, he returned hungry and thirsty. But when asking for food and drink in the houses of the city no one answered him. ANDenraged by all this, the Orisha decimated the city with his sword. His fury only stopped when his son appeared next to Exú and questioned the atrocity committed by Ogun. Soon he explained that no one received him with celebration and gifts, on the contrary, everyone ignored his thirst and hunger after his fight.

It was then that his son remembered his request to honor him with a day of silence. Coincidentally, that was the day that Ogun had left, so everyone honored the Orisha with the requested silence. Taken by remorse and shame, the Orisha dug a hole with his own sword and buried himself standing up.

Passion for Oshun

Tired of his life as a blacksmith, the Orisha once fled to the forest. Many Orixás did everything to get his attention, but Ogun hid in such a way that no one could attract him, until Oxum decided to try his tricks.

In the forest, Oshun spotted the warrior and began to spread his charms throughout the place. When Ogun saw her, it was love at first sight. Thus, Oxum started to return to the village and when Ogun realized, he was already in the city again for having followed her.

Obá and Iansã fall in love with Xangô

Obá and Iansã were wives of the powerful warrior Ogun, but the two fell in love with Xangô. In this way, they abandoned him to live with the other Xangô. For this and other reasons Ogun does not get along with Xangô.

Okra is a vegetable he just can’t stand. But this has a reason. It all started with his defeat in a battle. Fighting Xangô, who is the Orisha he can’t stand, he ended up slipping into an okra quizila strategically placed by his opponent. So when Ogun slipped Xangô got his victory.
