Macrame is a very old weaving technique, which consists of braided threads and tied in knots. They are mainly used in bed, table and bath linen, clothing, in accessories or decoratively.
Macrame conquered many adepts in Arab regions, in the early days of its existence, mainly in Turkey, but today, its technique is known worldwide and is the subject of many craft tutorials.
Have you always admired macrame pieces and wanted to learn but thought it would be too complicated? Forget it. See tips and tutorials to start venturing into this technique right now!
Macrame for Beginners: First Points to Get Started
The main and most basic macramé stitches are the double knot and festoon stitch. The first is made with 3 strands, one of which is stretched and the other two are braided around it.
The festoon uses only two threads, and the stitch format can vary according to the direction of the weft. Found it a little confusing? See the step by step of the festoon stitch, which is simpler, to better exemplify:
- Separate a wire or structure that will serve as a guide, leave it vertically;
- Take another thread, fold it in half and tie it to the base thread;
- Separate one of the threads tied to the structure, pass it over the base thread, then inside the loop that will be formed, passing it under the base thread;
- Pull to finish the knot. Repeat;
- Taking the other yarn that hasn’t been used yet, do the same thing as in the step above: pass it over the base yarn, then inside the loop and pull to complete the knot. Then repeat;
- Return to the first strand and repeat the process, always tying 2 knots in each strand.
