Observing the night sky near São Paulo
It may seem unlikely to be able to see the stars close to the city of São Paulo, but experts say that from 50km away from large cities it is possible for constellations and stars to appear. We selected some places:
Wedge
The city is perfect for a romantic getaway with its charming inns, chilly climate and beautiful landscapes. The average altitude is 1,100m and there you will find Pedra da Macela, 1,840m high and with a stunning view. At night it is possible to camp and look at the stars “up close”. Beautiful to see!
Saint Francis Xavier
Another mountainous destination in São Paulo is the charming and peaceful São Francisco Xavier, an environmental protection area surrounded by nature and at an altitude of 720m. Whether at the inns or on a scheduled night tour to observe the moon, stars and nebulae, the city is well worth it and enchants with its sky full of stars and mysticism on a cloudless night.
Santo Antônio do Pinhal
Located in Serra da Mantiqueira, Santo Antônio do Pinhal is 1,080m high and there we find Pico Agudo, at 1,634m high and which provides a stunning panoramic view during the day. Nova Friburgo
Listed by the National Observatory as one of the best cities for observing the stars, Nova Friburgo is far from major centers and has little light and atmospheric pollution, which makes observation easier. The city is also mountainous and has attractions surrounded by nature – including Três Picos State Park. An hour’s walk takes you to the Valley of the Gods and the camping area for those who like to take their tent and enjoy the glow of the stars. From there it is possible to follow with a guide to Pico Menor (2260m) and Pico Médio (2280 meters) in a very long walk.
Pico Maior, at 2,316m, is considered the largest mountain in Serra do Mar and can only be accessed by climbing.
Viscount of Mauá
With many waterfalls and bucolic landscapes, Visconde de Mauá is located in an environmental preservation area of Serra da Mantiqueira, 1,200 meters away. It’s worth venturing out during the day along the trails that line rivers and natural pools and at night stopping to watch the sky from somewhere peaceful.
Itatiaia National Park
Also located in Serra da Mantiqueira, with altitudes varying between 600 and 2,791m, the Itatiaia National Park is a conservation area that culminates in Pico das Agulhas Negras – the 5th highest in Brazil and the highest in Rio. of January. In the lower part of the park it is possible to take a trail of almost 4 hours and 6km to reach Três Picos and its 1,662m altitude. It’s another 6km to get back, but it’s worth it to see an unforgettable sunset and the stars appearing in the sky.

Hometown of the wonderful Carlos Drummond de Andrade, one of the greatest Brazilian writers of all time, Itabira is home to wonderful stargazing at night. With 795m of altitude, mountains and nature suitable for hiking, it was also designated by the National Observatory as one of the best points to observe them. Could it be that the local stars inspired Drummond to write beautiful phrases and love poems?
Alto Caparaó
Wow beautiful place! With an incredible view from its 997m height, Alto Caparaó is a municipality worth visiting. It is home to the third highest peak in Brazil, Pico da Bandeira (2,892m) and for those who are very adventurous, a night there is breathtaking, it is so wonderful. You can also stay in one of the many inns in the region, which despite having few inhabitants is a great option for a romantic trip.
São Tomé das Letras
Full of energy, São Tomé das Letras hides in its mysticism more than stories of UFO sightings. The village is at an altitude of 1,318m and at night through the clouds it is possible to distinguish galaxies and enjoy the stars – a fact that has led to several establishments using the word “stars” to attract the public. If you like an atmosphere of mystery and appreciate the stars, São Tomé and its bucolic style may surprise you.
