Influencer deconstruction, João Marques, plagiarism psychologist and professor at UnB

The internet stopped with the accusations of the psychologist and professor of the Department of Clinical Psychology at the University of Brasília (UnB), Valeska Zanello, in which she speaks openly in a post about how her work for years was plagiarized by the influencer and student João Marques, who self-styled writer, speaker and researcher.

João has more than 200 thousand followers on Instagram and creates content about toxic masculinity, machismo and other subjects in this universe. The psychologist said there was more than one occasion when the influencer would have plagiarized her work identically, without changing a single word and without giving her any credit. On Instagram, the researcher reported the experience:

“I have 25 years in psychology and a lot of study and research road to write what I wrote. But, of course, the golden rosemary, in an intuitive ray, had that idea out of nowhere. Even using the SAME words. Why is it so difficult for a man to endorse a woman’s work? It has a name: misogyny.”

This questioning by Valeska is super valid and there is even an English term that defines the act, bropriating. But after all, what does that mean? The particle “bro” comes from the word “brother”, that is, brother, man and “priating” would be an abbreviation of appropriation, that is, it is when a man appropriates the study, or ideas of a woman.

It is not a simple case of plagiarism, it is also gender violence, according to the psychologist. She found out a year and a half ago about the plagiarism of her research work on male WhatsApp groups in Brazil, the lines being identical.

Valeska also reported that her followers looked for the influencer to inform about the origin of the material, but were blocked by him. See the full outburst that the researcher made on her social network:

Being a woman in science is hard work, especially when it comes to recognition. Seeing her work being plagiarized so obviously is sickening. Finally, in the caption of her post, Valeska said: “Say NO to the erasure of women in science and knowledge production!!!”.
