I worked in network marketing and almost lost my family because of it

There probably isn’t a person who doesn’t know what multilevel marketing is, or network marketing as it is more popularly known. Generally, people are very skeptical about this type of service and barely approach or want contact. However, some enter this world so intensely that it ceases to be as pleasant a job as it was in the beginning.

My name is Inna and I want to tell readers of incredible.club what I learned in the world of network marketing.

It all started when I decided to learn English. A few years ago I wanted to improve my English so I found a teacher. Her name was Lena, we were the same age and we liked each other very much, so our communication was easy and we talked about everything.

A few months later, Lena casually mentioned that she could only get through her hectic routine thanks to the vitamin cocktails she drank from some random brand. I thought, “What’s the problem? Everyone does what they want in life.” Lena also told wonderful stories about toothpaste that stopped cavities and amazingly rejuvenating cosmetics.

After some time, she purposely asked me if my husband’s financial dependency was pissing me off, because I was on maternity leave and wasn’t getting much. And actually, I was really uncomfortable with it. Lena told me she was in the same situation. It was then that she started to get involved in network marketing, because it was the ideal business for a young mother. You order the goods without leaving your home, and during walks with the child, you try to sell them.

The way she spoke was really convincing. The timing was also ideal. Suddenly I said to myself, “Yes, I think I’ll try it”.

I registered with the company. Registration was paid, but it is an investment in future business. Lena was always ready to answer all my questions, she encouraged me and talked about the bonuses I would get if I sold the products for a certain amount. She spoke in such an infectious and confident way about how many opportunities were around us that, involuntarily, I wanted to run to look for clients. This attitude lasted around half an hour. Then the enthusiasm dissipated, and I came back to my sanity and wondered why those words had rubbed off on me so much.

My mentor once called me to a consultants’ meeting and told me about the wonderful people I would meet: true leaders who chose independence. I pictured in my head a small conference room, a fiery speaker and young people interested in a common cause. I spent the last of my money getting ready for this date.

The meeting was held in the mentor’s apartment. What I saw when I arrived shocked me. The manager who chose independence was a woman of about 75, dressed in home clothes. All around, carpets and crystals full of dust and the smell of rotten food. All those present were also elderly. It felt surreal, but I really wanted to believe that it would give me a bright future, so I quickly found a plausible explanation for everything.

However, I couldn’t understand one thing: where did these old men find buyers for their products? At first, I couldn’t sell anything: no one needed vitamins or wonderful detergents. But some time later I saw how the business worked. In line at the bank, I recognized one of the ladies who was at the meeting; she struck up a conversation with a woman in line and within 5 minutes sold her a perfume. It was so easy and elegant! I decided that I could too. After all, he wasn’t robbing anyone; people would decide whether to buy or not.

And a similar case would happen to me soon. Walking through the park with my daughter, I noticed a mother with a stroller. I approached and we started talking, we took a little walk together. It was very embarrassing, but I was encouraged by the words I heard from Lena at the meeting: by not selling, I do a favor for which this woman will thank me later.

I managed to sell her some deodorant, but it was terribly embarrassing: in the middle of a friendly conversation, you suddenly make it clear that you only approached her to sell her something. And you see how people—too embarrassed to refuse—buy what they don’t need.

I told Lena about this episode and my feelings. But she didn’t seem to hear anything. My mentor scolded me for low sales and offered to buy more goods with his money so that I had stock and could demonstrate the quality of the goods. When I replied that I couldn’t, he said, “If you don’t have anything else, you need to take out a loan, everyone does that.”

Since I don’t officially work, they would never approve a loan for me, and I had no money left. So I decided to ask my husband. When I got home, I said I wanted to buy more merchandise. He said I wasn’t thinking straight and that this had all gone too far. And for the first time in his life, he refused to help me. We had a terrible fight.

I continued to do “business” (and thanks to my husband, without expanding my stock), and one day Lena convinced me to participate in a big seminar that the company was going to have. I agreed: I really needed to get out of the routine for a few days and see some environment different from what I was used to.

The official reception part of the seminar was planned in a famous hotel restaurant. Wow, reception! I was very happy with the possibility that after 2.5 years at home taking care of a child, I could wear a dress, high heels and talk to different people. Granted, the travel and accommodation were on me, but I was ready to pay for this party.

In addition, relations with my husband deteriorated. As soon as I mentioned it was a company event we immediately had a fight. He did not understand why I needed all this, and he shouted that I was becoming a zombie. The whole time he made jokes about how I would be a millionaire in a pyramid scheme. Therefore, when I had the opportunity to escape to this seminar for a few days, I gladly did.

Speaking the truth, a little while before Lena had called me and we had a conversation. She told me that she had borrowed a beautiful dress from a friend for the seminar, and then asked me to pay in advance for her English classes because she didn’t have enough money to pay the installment on a loan. I gave her a month’s tuition in advance, but I thought to myself, if she’s doing so well and works for a company that allows her a life of exuberance, as she says, then why does she borrow dresses from her friends and can’t afford the money? loan? This caused me a lot of doubts.

As for the seminar, I must admit: everything was at the highest level. The meeting took place in a large hall with a stage, a host and the company’s biggest stars. The event cost no less than a thousand dollars. However, the seminar itself was not essentially different from meeting that elderly manager, and I had the same feeling: that I was watching a cheap presentation.

Later, I learned a bit about NLP and realized that a network marketing company workshop is a great place to see how it works. Each speaker, in one way or another, starts a conversation about how the world is full of opportunity, and by selling the company’s products, we do good for people; a lot of bullshit. Speakers told moving stories about how difficult their childhood was, that they had a poor adolescence, and that a miracle happened — a meeting with a company consultant. After that, everyone had a big turn in life. And the result: “See where I am now”. Where they were now was not particularly clear: many of the “millionaires” had a very shabby appearance.

I understood why these companies like to organize group events: it’s easier to install an idea in the head of a crowd and thus motivate someone who is in doubt. When you see dozens or hundreds of people in front of you, confident that the sale of such a product is good, after 15 minutes, literally, you begin to believe it too.

The concern to reinforce that the company was environmentally friendly was constant, and speakers constantly said that the products were completely harmless and that even the packaging was recyclable. But, for some strange reason, none of the products had a seal or sticker attesting that the merchandise or its packaging was environmentally friendly. When I inquired about this I got the reply that “our company is so famous and respected that we don’t need any certification or marking”. Wow, even world famous companies need the environmental responsibility label on the packaging.

The feast after such an inspiring seminar is not a generous gift from leadership to their associates. After drinking and eating in the company of these people, you become part of the “family”. You can’t just leave. The party reinforces the effect of the workshop. Network marketers found a gold mine when they invented the team-building method.

Although I still believed a lot of what I was told at the company seminar, there were more and more doubts. At one point I thought all these millionaires were contract actors. After doing a search on their names, I couldn’t find any information from reputable sources—only business advisor forums.

I expected to have fun and meet interesting people, but I was disappointed in this regard: most of the people in the company were much older than me, and our ideas about fun were very different. Also, everyone was so loaded with information that they couldn’t talk about anything other than the company, how good the company was, and how lucky they were to get into such a tight-knit community.

Lena was clearly very comfortable in that nursing home. She went from table to table, saying that she admired everyone, idolizing the speakers as real millionaires, and said she was proud to belong to the “elite”.

The party ended pretty early, so we headed down to the lobby for a glass of wine and a chat. After hundreds of compliments from older gentlemen, Lena felt like an invincible woman — so, when ordering wine at the bar, she decided to use her motivation to sell the bartender a cereal bar that is supposed to give you energy; I was mortified with embarrassment. The bartender looked at us with a pitying face…
