How to organize a children’s birthday party

If you think this has gone out of style, know that the novelty is to rescue the birthdays celebrated at home, in which the child is, literally, the protagonist of the party – and not just another guest at the buffet parties.

Party organizer Maria Estela Curioni, from São Paulo, from Caraminholand, reveals that the secret is to put together a celebration that escapes common sense. “The child needs to feel that his party is exclusive, that everything was done according to what she likes”, she says. This includes everything from choosing the invitation, going through food, decoration, recreation and even souvenirs. Despite being more labor intensive, house parties offer many advantages. The main thing is freedom of choice, allowing you to define everything according to the child’s taste and style. Letícia Alencar, who runs a party company named after her, also in São Paulo, reinforces that parents and children should be involved in the production of the party. “The important thing is that parents actively participate in the details of the party, exposing their desires, as well as the children”, she opines.

The personalized party should be held in a family environment: either in your backyard, at your grandmother’s house or at another relative’s apartment. Remember: the more space available, the better the party atmosphere will be. If the celebration is outdoors, it is always better to predict rain and have a cover or alternative location prepared.

Choosing a theme is one of the most important steps. Estela says that, before deciding how to think about the decor, she talks to the birthday boy, pays attention to what he really likes and wants to see at the party. “The child needs to feel that his opinion is very important. After all, the party will honor her, right?” Any item can become a theme, from your favorite color, a drawing that represents something and even your favorite movie or toy. “Using toys that belong to the child on the table adds enormous meaning to the party”, exemplifies Estela. Important: the wish granted must be that of the little ones – parents are only allowed to decide on their own at parties of 1 and 2 years old. “Normally, parents like parties that refer to their childhood, such as: Little Red Riding Hood, famous dogs, vintage toys, etc. Children, on the other hand, prefer things that are more related to everyday life, such as dolls’ tea, ballerinas, movie characters, soccer, etc”, reveals Letícia.

At a house party, what can’t be missing are creative pranks. Before organizing the itinerary of activities, take into account the age of the birthday person and the guests. If you prefer, hire monitors to keep an eye on the kids. Children should only stop playing at two moments of the party: at “snack time” and “congratulations”. Suggestion: ask your child to help select the songs they like best. Just don’t make the sound too loud, okay? And take note of the games that can’t be missed: jumping rope, jumping rubber band, flag catch, tag and hopscotch.

Choosing a beautiful invitation template is very important, bringing all the data relevant to the event, in addition to a subtle reference to the theme. “The invitation must be dazzling, where the guest thinks: ‘I can’t miss this party’”, defends Letícia. The models made with scrapbooking or craft paper are currently the most requested. In addition to giving theme and decoration ideas, children can help in making and delivering invitations. The use of disposable cups, cutlery, plates and bottles is recommended, including to avoid minor accidents. The menu must be defined according to the party time and the number of guests. As a reference, remember that children and the elderly consume less than adults and young people and consider that two children are equivalent to one adult. If the party takes place in the afternoon, offer snacks and varied snacks and bet on healthy foods, such as mini-stews, cheese bread, fruit salad and natural juices. During the party, stipulate the “snack time” to make sure that all children will eat. “You can either organize a picnic with the guests or separate mini tables for the little ones”, suggests Estela. Children are anxious, want to play all the time and will only stop to eat if all their friends do the same.

Oh! “Domestic” parties are also perfect for rescuing older cakes and sweets, such as iced cake (the one wrapped in aluminum foil), colored jellies, brigadeiro, bicho-de-pé, cajuzinho and beijinho. If you want to give a modern look to the vintage party, bet on delicious cupcakes.

The souvenir offered to the guests needs to be up to the party. Pay attention to the harmony and tune with the chosen theme, the finishing, the safety and the type of material used. An interesting idea is, during the party, to hold a souvenir workshop, that is, each guest can prepare their own little gift. “If the party is Superman-themed, guests can make superhero capes. Or if the theme is princesses, the girls can assemble their own cloth dolls”, suggests Letícia.
