How to lighten nails stained by dark colored nail polish

Having yellow nails is a big nuisance for many women. Some of the causes of this problem are the use of dark colored nail polishes and acetone-based nail polish removers.

When a dark nail polish is applied directly to the nails, without using the transparent base first, the nail polish pigments adhere to the nail surface, which can leave them with a different color than their normal appearance.

Acetone nail polish removers are another enemy of light nails.

This is because this substance takes away the natural moisture of the nail, causing chemical changes that cause the yellowish appearance.

Removing dark nail polish and later applying light nail polish can be quite a lot of work if you don’t know a few tricks that make this process faster and less aggressive.

Here are some valuable tips to escape the problem and always have well-groomed nails.

Tricks to keep your nails free from yellowing

  • Before applying nail polish, always apply a base coat. If you want extra protection, look for foundations enriched with moisturizers and nutrients in their composition. The bases also contribute to greater durability of the coloring;
  • When removing nail polish, use non-acetone based removers. These products are a little more expensive, but they guarantee healthy looking nails. When applying the remover, be careful not to make any sudden movements. The ideal is that the movement is from top to bottom and that you use toothpicks to remove the enamel from the corners;
  • After removing the nail polish, if the nails are yellowed, use a tablespoon of hydrogen peroxide (volume 10) mixed in 100ml of hot water and let your nails soak for ten minutes. Wash your hands well afterwards;
  • Another option is to dissolve two denture fixing tablets in 100ml of warm water, dip a small brush and rub it on the nails;
  • If you are not a fan of homemade recipes, there are nail whiteners on sale in specialized cosmetics stores, these, in addition to being perfumed, promise to remove stains and give uniformity to the texture of the nails;
  • Be careful with the material used on the nails, if it is shared with other people or you do the nail with the nail salon equipment, make sure it is hygienic and sterilized, as yellowed nails can be a sign of fungi or infections that can be transmitted through a manicure kit;
  • Always apply a moisturizing cream to the nails without enamel, as hydration contributes to the maintenance of the natural protective film on the surface of the nails.

Pay attention to the health of your nails and look for a dermatologist if their appearance remains altered, as different colors, deformations, pallor, weakening and marks can be a sign of a disease that should be treated by a specialist.
