Gluteoplasty is a type of plastic surgery that is being sought after by those who want to increase or reshape the buttocks. What is gluteoplasty and what is it used for?

According to the plastic surgeon, “gluteoplasty is plastic surgery performed to increase the buttocks. The procedure reshapes the region, restores the contour, shape and size of the buttocks, and is generally done for aesthetic purposes.”

“It is performed with implantation of silicone prostheses and/or fat graft taken from liposuction from another part of the body. The most suitable professional to perform the procedure is the plastic surgeon”, added Rita.

Questions about gluteoplasty

Before performing any surgery, it is important to ask all questions about the procedure to be safer. With that in mind, check out the answers from the professional on the main questions about gluteoplasty below:

1. How is gluteoplasty surgery performed?

Rita Noronha (RN): “Gluteoplasty is performed in the operating room with general, epidural or spinal anesthesia. When silicone implants (oval or round) are used, one or two small incisions are made in the gluteal groove. The size of the prosthesis varies greatly according to the patient’s measurements and wishes. When fat grafting or fat grafting is performed, an amount of fat is liposuctioned from another region of the body – usually the flank – and injected into the gluteal region. The techniques can also be combined. The average time of the procedure varies around 3 to 5 hours and the hospital stay is 24 hours”.

2. How is the postoperative period and what are the basic recommendations?

RN: “The postoperative period must follow some recommendations, they are: take all the medications prescribed by the surgeon; lie on your stomach, or if you prefer, lie on your back; support three pillows on the back of the thighs so that the buttocks are not completely supported on the mattress; having the head of the bed elevated to 30 degrees; avoid sitting for two weeks; avoid exerting yourself in the first few days, starting exercise with long walks after 30 days and other more intense physical activities after six weeks”.

3. Is there any risk of rejection and/or infection in the region?

RN: “Regardless of the medical work having been done with the greatest care, expertise and caution, the result will also depend on the body’s reaction to the surgery and postoperative care, and in some cases, complications may occur, such as opening stitches, prosthesis rejection and infection.

4. What is the recommended period to replace the prosthesis?

RN: “The silicone implants have a ten-year warranty. From then on, they should be followed up annually with a physical and radiological examination. Exchanges are only necessary in case of breakage, changes in shape, infection or rejection by the body”.

5. Where is the scar?

RN: “It is located in the intergluteal groove (between the two sides of the buttocks), a very hidden place with good healing”.

6. How to sit down and go to the bathroom after gluteoplasty?

RN: “It is recommended to avoid sitting for two weeks. When it is extremely necessary, the ideal is to use a pillow with mold technology (such as NASA’s). You can go to the bathroom normally, just taking care to support yourself only on your thigh and not your butt”.

The professional also reported that the procedure costs an average of 15 thousand reais. However, this may vary by region and professional. In addition, Rita explained that “the abdomen and flanks are fat donor areas for the glutes”, that is, it is possible to remove fat from these regions to implant in the glutes.

Risks and contraindications of gluteoplasty

“The risks, in addition to those inherent to any surgical procedure, the most common are: opening of the stitches, asymmetry of the gluteus, compression of the sciatic nerve, contracture of the prosthesis, pulmonary embolism and/or fat embolism, formation of fluid accumulation, fibrosis, infection and rejection of the prosthesis”, warned Dr. Rita.
