How are the children who witness their mother being attacked?

THE domestic violence still presents significant numbers in Brazil. According to Atlas of Violence 2019produced by Ipea (Institute of Applied Economic Research), 4,936 women were murdered in 2017 and the number of victims killed inside homes grew by 17.1% – which may indicate an increase in cases of femicide🇧🇷 In addition, in the last three years, almost 900,000 women have asked for a protective measure across the country.

However, it is not just women who suffer from domestic violence, but also their children. Psychologist Laura França, from the Prontobaby group, explains that, among the different reactions that children may have when witnessing an aggression, are fear and anger at the parent or aggressor.

“Tantrums, crying and aggression are behaviors that demonstrate the suffering of those who witness domestic abuse”, he says. “Another common attitude is wanting to draw attention in order to end a fight”, adds França.

At school, consequences may also appear, such as attention deficit, a result of the stress faced by the child. “These circumstances can trigger an excess of tension in the child or adolescent with the arrival of the father at home, followed by a constant tachycardia, as it is a stress far beyond what he should bear”, explains the psychologist.

As an adult, the child may also suffer from emotional exhaustion, as pointed out by França, followed by Panic Syndrome and depressionin addition to binge eating and even chemical dependence and aggression.

To avoid these consequences, the specialist explains that “the best attitude is to seek psychological support for this child, as he will need support to learn to deal with the traumas”.

Support of the Maria da Penha Law

THE Maria da Penha Law turned 13 in August and, in addition to his wife, the lawyer Beatriz Guerra explains that the victim’s relatives can also be supported by her in situations of violence. “A study is carried out to assess the child’s real condition so that the best measures are applied if there is a risk to their physical and emotional integrity”, she says.

“Among the protective measures there is the removal [do agressor] of the home, domicile or place of coexistence with the victim, as well as the restriction or suspension of visits to minor dependents, after consulting the multidisciplinary care team or similar service”, lists Guerra.

The lawyer also claims that, in addition to the Maria da Penha Law, the Penal Code, the Child and Adolescent Statute and the Parental Alienation Law can provide support to the victim’s children.

It is also necessary to emphasize the importance of denouncing cases of domestic violence, an initiative that can be taken by the child himself, as explained by França. “It is important to break the cycle of silence, fear, shame and ‘secret’ that happens within an environment of domestic violence”, warns the psychologist.

“The son can be, yes, the one who breaks this cycle of silence, calling disk to denounce [180] or telling an outside adult, be it an uncle, grandfather, teacher, etc., and taking the first step towards the recovery of your home”, he concludes.
