Homemade wax: recipes, opinions and necessary care

Going monthly to a salon or aesthetic center to shave is part of many women’s beauty routine. Most of them consider these places more appropriate and comfortable for hair removal. After all, the client just needs to lie down on the stretcher and let the professional in charge take care of the service.

However, paying for a professional to shave once a month, or even every 15 days, can weigh a lot on a woman’s pocket, especially if she has the habit of shaving several parts of her body. In addition, with the rush of everyday life, not all women are able to schedule an appointment with the epilator during business hours. It is mainly these two factors that lead many of them to resort to homemade methods.

For years and years, sugar and lemon-based mixtures have been used as an alternative to waxing. These are called homemade waxes.

But are they, in fact, a good solution to remove hair? What precautions are needed when preparing and using them? Questions like these make many women feel insecure about shaving at home with this type of wax.

Flávia Sampaio, beautician at Werner Coiffeur, highlights that the advantages of using homemade wax are value and practicality. That’s because, in general, homemade waxes are made with few and popular ingredients and, in addition, waxing takes place in the comfort of your own home.

Below you can see two homemade wax recipes:

1. Wax with sugar and lemon

The recipe is suggested by beautician Flávia Sampaio:

Ingredients

  • 4 cups white granulated sugar
  • 1 cup of pure lemon juice
  • 1 cup of water

Place all ingredients in a pan and turn on medium heat. For about 20 minutes, stir the mixture in the pan until it looks like a caramel. “To check if the wax is at the right point, put 1 spoon of water on a dessert plate and then put half a spoon of the wax on this plate… , if the dish wax is pulling. If it is still not pulling, return to low heat for a few more minutes until the wax is at the right point”, explains Flávia.

Also according to the beautician, homemade wax can be used on all parts of the body, such as armpits, groin, legs.

However, it is worth noting that it is necessary to be very careful with the temperature of the wax so as not to burn yourself. Also, if the wax is used on the face (to remove upper lip hair), it is essential to wash the area several times after waxing, as lemon can cause burns if exposed to the sun.

2. Wax with honey

Another possibility is to use honey to make homemade wax. It is suitable for the most sensitive areas of the skin, such as upper lip, armpits and groin.

Ingredients

  • 1/2 kg of sugar
  • 1 tablespoon (dessert) honey
  • 1 lemon juice
  • 1 tablespoon of water

Preparation mode

Gradually place the sugar in a pan on the fire, stirring constantly. Then add the honey, always stirring, until you create a thick syrup. When the syrup is ready, add half a lemon (juice) and keep stirring until it boils. Add the other half of the lemon and then the water. Remove the pan from the heat and let it cool for five minutes. Place the wax in a glass jar.

Different opinions on the use of homemade wax

Letícia Mendes, 30, an architect, says she has been shaving her legs, groin and armpits, always in beauty salons, for about 15 years. “I see no reason to use homemade waxes. They are a lot of work and a lot of mess to do, in my opinion. But I never tried to use them. I trust a lot more products used by a professional epilator,” she says.

Nanda A. Ferreira, 34 years old, secretary, says that she has already used homemade waxes. “I mixed sugar, water and lemon a few times to make a wax. I think the recipe is way cheaper than going to a salon to shave, so I think it’s worth it, yes!” she explains.

Juliana Melotto, 20 years old, student, also prefers to shave with a professional. “My epilator comes home, which is even better. But even if I had to go to a salon, I would prefer… I’ve never used homemade waxes,” she says.

Necessary care with hair removal made with homemade wax

Regardless of the recipe used, it is essential to be careful when performing hair removal at home. According to beautician Flávia, when using a homemade wax, in some cases, the woman may not obtain the same result offered in a salon and runs the risk of being allergic to some ingredient of the mixture.

In this second case, an essential tip is to perform a touch test to see if you really don’t have an allergy or rejection to the ingredients. The recommendation is to wait about 24 hours to be sure, if there is no reaction, you can start the procedure.

It is also very important to be very careful with the temperature of the wax so as not to risk burning yourself.

The wax I used for hair removal should not be reused, but discarded immediately. But if there is a part of the wax that has not yet been used, it can be kept in a glass container with a lid. If the wax becomes hard, you must heat it in a water bath until it returns to its initial texture.

After hair removal done at home, do not go out in the sun and avoid applying products such as deodorants or moisturizers on the same day. Also, don’t wear tight clothes or clothes that can generate some kind of friction with the shaved area.

It is worth mentioning that it is interesting to use homemade waxes made with sugar sporadically, as they tend to be more aggressive than the others. If in doubt, be sure to consult a professional you trust before joining home waxing.
