History of Iansã – Discover the history of the Orixá in mythology

Queen of lightning, hurricanes, cyclones and gales, Iansã is the Goddess of the sword of fire and passions. To better understand the power of this goddess it is necessary to know better the Iansã’s story.

History of Iansã in mythology

In her youth, Iansã traveled through many kingdoms and was the passion of many kings, among them Exu, Oxossi, Ogun, Logun-Edé. To live with all these kings, the goddess used all her intelligence and cunning.

She didn’t travel through all these realms and live with these kings for nothing, she aimed to learn as much as she could about all the realms and get to know the universe better. With Ogun she learned to handle the sword and gained the right to use it.

After this feat in the history of Iansã, she traveled to the kingdom of Oxaguian and there he taught her to use the shield to protect herself from enemy attacks, also gaining the right to use it.

Continuing her journey, Iansã met Exu and from him learned everything about fire and magic. Then he learned from Oxossi how to hunt, how to skin the buffalo and how to transform into a buffalo (with the help of magic learned from Exu).

In the story of Iansã it is reported that she made a brief passage through the kingdom of Logun-edé and he taught her to fish. After meeting this young king of the fishing universe, her adventure was not over yet.

She left for the kingdom of Obaluaê with the aim of getting to know her own face and discovering the mysteries that surrounded her. She learned how to deal with the dead (the eguns) and how to control them. And after all these trips, the next step in Iansã’s story was decisive, as she left the kingdom of Xangô to visit last.

Iansã believed that as Xangô was the most vain of kings, he would learn to live richly with him. Upon arriving in the Thunder God’s realm, she learned to love in the truest and most sincere way there is and fell in love intensely, as she could never imagine herself loving. He taught her how to master the powers of lightning and gave her his heart.
