Green coffee: what it is, benefits, care and contraindications

Green coffee has gained more and more fame due to its antioxidant properties and the possibility of helping in the weight loss process. It is a more natural product when compared to traditional coffee and has much more caffeine.

Ana Paula Gava (CRN 12100861), nutritionist from the Federal University of Espírito Santo (UFES), with a Master’s degree in Food Science and Technology with an emphasis on Applied Nutrition from UFES, Coach from the Brazilian Institute of Coaching and Nutrition Coaching, comments that coffee Verde offers health benefits and can indeed be an ally in the weight loss process. Learn how this food works and what are its main indications and contraindications.

What is green coffee?

Green coffee is produced from green coffee beans that do not go through the roasting process. In this way, it has 3 to 5 times more antioxidants than the traditional version of coffee, being “purer” and quite beneficial to health. It especially contains chlorogenic acid (a phytochemical) and twice as much caffeine compared to traditional roasted coffee.

benefits of green coffee

The benefits attributed to green coffee are due to the substances it contains, chlorogenic acid and caffeine. In this way, its main advantages can be highlighted:

  • Prevention of hypertension: Ana Paula explains that green coffee beans have a high concentration of phenolic acids, especially polyphenols, such as chlorogenic acid, which has hypotensive effects. “It also has elements such as calcium, potassium and magnesium, which contribute to the prevention and stabilization of hypertension, even though there is caffeine in green coffee”, she says.
  • Weight loss: the nutritionist comments that studies indicate that green coffee helps in weight loss, acting in the mobilization and burning of fat, as well as in the reduction of fat storage in cells.
  • Ally for physical activity: because it contains good doses of caffeine, green coffee can be a good ally for those who practice physical activity, with excellent thermogenic effect.
  • Blood sugar stabilization: Ana Paula adds that recent research also shows that green coffee contributes to stabilizing blood sugar levels, demonstrating a 32% reduction in blood sugar levels after a meal using 400 mg of coffee extract daily consumption green.
  • Disease prevention: the nutritionist points out that chlorogenic acids, present in green coffee, have anti-inflammatory, anticancer, antimutagenic and antioxidant properties. In this way, the product can act in the prevention of various types of diseases.

It is good to know, however, that green coffee should not be consumed in excess and that, if used in isolation and sporadically, it is unlikely to provide significant effects.

Green coffee weight loss?

Is green coffee really effective in weight loss? Ana Paula replies that it does help in the weight loss process. “The effects of green coffee on weight loss are attributed to chlorogenic acid, found in large amounts in the beans, especially before roasting. Studies carried out in rats have shown that green coffee extract has inhibitory potential for fat absorption in the liver and is an effective suppressor of fat metabolism in the liver as well, evidencing that this contributes to weight loss,” she says.

“In addition, another study found, only in humans, that green coffee extract is capable of potentiating the mobilization of fat deposits in adipose tissue and preventing its deposition in new adipose tissue and, with this, potentiating the effect of a moderately calorie-restricted diet on overweight individuals,” adds the nutritionist.

Physiologically, explains Ana Paula, the process takes place as follows: these acids inhibit the enzyme glucose 6-phosphatase, preventing the breakdown of liver glycogen and, thus, inhibiting the release of glucose by the liver. “Thus, green coffee lowers blood sugar and regulates plasma insulin levels. Therefore, there is the mobilization of the body’s fat reserves and their β-oxidation as a source of energy, allowing the reduction of fat mass. That is, it directly helps in mobilizing and burning fat, as well as decreasing fat storage in our cells,” she highlights.

It is worth noting, however, that green coffee “does not work miracles”. That is, alone will not make anyone lose weight overnight. It is important that it is included within a balanced diet and that it is combined with the frequent practice of physical activity.

How to consume green coffee

Ana Paula points out that the best way to consume green coffee is in instant preparations or in capsules, as it does not have a very pleasant taste.

“The recommended daily dose for consumption, in order to have an effect on weight loss, can be between 100 and 200 mg. And it is necessary to be very careful when exceeding these values, as studies indicate that it can have a potent diuretic action”, adds the nutritionist.

Side effects and contraindications

It is worth mentioning that green coffee in excess, highlights Ana Paula, can cause toxicity, leading to serious degrees of nervousness and palpitations. “Therefore, it is recommended that you never exceed the 9 g dose a day,” she says.

“And when green coffee is associated with other stimulants, some side effects can arise, including insomnia, nervousness and palpitations”, adds the nutritionist.

Green coffee is contraindicated for people who suffer from anxiety or nervousness and/or who have gastrointestinal problems such as gastritis or ulcers. “It is also contraindicated for those who have irritable bowel syndrome and for pregnant women. Children, especially those who are very hyperactive, should not consume green coffee either”, reinforces Ana Paula.

Now you know that green coffee is a product with great potential to be beneficial for weight loss and health as a whole. However, it should be consumed in moderation and, preferably, after indication of a health professional, such as nutritionist or doctor. Enjoy and clarify your doubts about coffee with coconut oil.
