Grape seed oil: see the benefits and learn how to use it

It is no secret that grapes are a fruit of high nutritional quality. What not everyone knows is that their seeds are also valuable. That’s because they are rich in phenolic compounds, vitamin E and give rise to grape seed oil, a vegetable oil much appreciated for its various uses. Learn more about this product:

7 benefits of grape seed oil

Grape seed oil stands out especially for its antioxidant properties. Check out the main benefits it can offer both for beauty and health:

  1. Helps in preventing thrombosis: Camila Pedrosa (CRN 15858), nutritionist at Viver Nutrição e Gastronomia, explains that grape seed oil is rich in resveratrol, a potent antioxidant, anti-inflammatory and antiplatelet agent that prevents the formation of plaques that form thrombi (clots that can obstruct the circulation of blood in the body).
  2. It is an ally of heart health: “resveratrol, being an antioxidant, prevents the oxidation of LDL, thus reducing cholesterol and preventing the development of cardiovascular diseases, such as myocardial infarction. Resveratrol also favors the production of HDL (good cholesterol)”, highlights Camila.
  3. Prevents premature aging: Camila recalls that grape seed is rich in phenolic compounds and vitamin E, offering great results in preventing skin aging.
  4. Leaves skin more hydrated and smooth: Fernanda Casagrande (CRM 23420), dermatologist member of the Brazilian Society of Dermatology and the American Academy of Dermatology, explains that grape seed oil, rich in fatty acids and vitamin E, forms a potent film on the skin, leaving it softer and hydrated.
  5. Prevents stretch marks: being rich especially in vitamin E makes grape seed oil a good ally in preventing stretch marks, as Fernanda comments.
  6. Hydrates nails and cuticles: dermatologist Fernanda explains that, if applied frequently, the oil leaves the cuticle more hydrated and, thus, the nails grow faster. “It can also alleviate the dryness caused by nail polish and its removers,” she adds.
  7. It contributes to more hydrated and beautiful hair: “between the hair cuticles there is a kind of ‘cement’, which is lost through coloring, discoloration, use of a flat iron and excess dryer. The hair is frizzy and unruly. Grape seed oil, in turn, helps to replace this lost lipid. The hair becomes softer, with less frizz and a brighter appearance”, explains Fernanda.

Grape seed oil is still often used in body massages and as a carrier oil (vehicle for essential oils to penetrate through the skin).

Where to buy

Camila explains that, in cosmetic stores, it is possible to find versions for skin and hair and, in natural products stores, the version in capsules and for culinary use. Dermatologist Fernanda reinforces that, despite costing a little more, cold-pressed oils are the best option, as they integrate all the properties of this oil.

“To choose a good oil, read the ingredients list. It needs to have grape seed oil as the first ingredient and not have the addition of dyes, sweeteners (sweeteners), it is also important that this oil is cold pressed, it must be 100% natural and pure”, highlights the nutritionist.

How to use grape seed oil

Learn how to use grape seed oil to actually enjoy its benefits:

on the nails

Dermatologist Fernanda explains that, on nails, the oil can be used directly before and after enamelling.

In the skin

“On the skin, grape seed oil can be used in manipulation, associated with other actives suitable for the skin. If you are going to use it directly, it can be used in a small amount, right after showering, with the skin still damp”, highlights the dermatologist.

in the hair

Fernanda suggests applying a generous amount of the oil to the hair, leaving it on overnight and washing it off in the morning. “I don’t recommend it as a repairer for ends because it has a very oily consistency and makes the strands heavier”, she adds.

culinary use

The nutritionist explains that grape seed oil should not be used in the preparation of meals (ie, be heated), as it has a large amount of polyunsaturated fat, which reacts with oxygen forming free radicals. The oil for culinary use, found in health food stores, can be used to season salads, for example, but it is interesting that it is included in the diet with the indication of a nutritionist.

in capsules

“Grape seed oil can be taken in capsules in some cases, however, the dosage needs to be adjusted according to the needs of each individual. This dosage is adjusted by a nutritionist through the analysis of biochemical tests”, explains Camila.

“Do not use without professional supervision, as its excessive use can cause the opposite effect and increase the level of inflammation”, warns the nutritionist.

Warnings and Contraindications

The oil must be indicated by a nutritionist in specific cases and appropriate dosages. Nutritionist Camila adds that it is necessary to be very careful with the use of this oil in capsules, as it is necessary to balance it with omega-3 in the body, since grape seed oil is very rich in omega-6 (linoleic acid) . If there is no such balance, it can be very harmful and even inflammatory.

Regarding beauty care, Fernanda explains that the use should be avoided if the person has any type of allergy to grapes and their derivatives. In addition, “in oily and acne-prone skin, you should avoid using it on the face and trunk”, concludes the dermatologist.
