What is mandelic acid?

According to Dr. Gabriela, mandelic acid is part of a group of molecules known as alpha-hydroxy acids (AHA). This is a group of natural or synthetic substances that can be found in fruits and other foods and that have been studied in the treatment of skin for promoting its renewal, hydration and firmness. It is mainly used in photoaging, acne and hyperpigmentation treatments.

What is mandelic acid used for?

1. Acts on cell renewal: Mandelic acid accelerates the cell renewal process, acting as a powerful exfoliant and eliminating dead cells.
2. Lightens the skin: powerful depigmenting agent, the acid acts on the epidermal layer of the skin, blocking the synthesis of melanin and favoring an even tone.
3. Promotes Collagen Production: One of the reasons mandelic acid improves the appearance of the skin is by stimulating the production of collagen, which is the main protein found in the skin and connective tissue.
4. It has antibacterial action: it fights the Proprionibacterium acnes bacteria, which are involved in the acne process.
5. It is ideal for sensitive skin: Mandelic acid is less aggressive to the skin when compared to other alpha-hydroxy acids.

It is not by chance that mandelic acid has been increasingly used. In view of its properties, it is indicated as an aid in the treatment of acne, rejuvenation and skin hyperpigmentation, such as melasma.

How to use

The product should be used overnight, on clean, dry skin. The next day, it must be removed while cleaning the face. After its use, using sunscreen is essential.

Where to buy

Mandelic acid can be found in some ready-made or manipulated creams, in addition to being an asset widely used in chemical peels performed in the office. It can be purchased over-the-counter in pharmacies, but ideally, it is recommended by your dermatologist, who will evaluate your skin and prescribe a product suitable for your needs.

Cautions and Contraindications

This product is contraindicated for pregnant women, lactating women, skin with lesions and sensitivity to mandelic acid. It should also be avoided by patients with tanned skin, with solar erythema, who use depilatory wax and are being treated with isotretinoin.
