Exus and their phalanges: see how they act in umbanda, their orixás and more!

First of all, it is necessary to understand what an exu is and what is its function in Yoruba religions. In Candomblé, Exu is the messenger of the other orixás. According to the history of the religion, he made an agreement with the others so that whenever someone needed their intermediary, he should deliver his dispatch first. And so it is to this day.

Within Umbanda, the concept is almost the same, however, each orixá has several exus, identified with different clothes and different behaviors. These phalanges are those that normally join people in terreiros and talk about the spiritual life. They are of great value when we talk about Umbanda and clarifications in general.

The exus in Umbanda are understood as the ‘street people’ or ‘catiço’, which are spirits that were once human, died and today help in the spiritual direction of other human beings. An example, which is not an exu, but follows this same concept, is the famous Zé Pilintra, who was a man and today is a helping entity.

Quimbanda is a Yoruba religion that, although not as cited as Umbanda and Candomblé, has very well-known rites practiced by the Yoruba faith. It is she, for example, who brings the concept of ‘street people’ to Umbanda.

It is valid to say that it is in her that the exus and pombagiras work and that, in several cases, they use negative force to be and be present, but that does not mean that the beings are negative, they just frequent spaces where spirits can be present. obsessors.

Within Candomblé, Exu is one of the greatest orishas there is. That’s because it is highly respected within any ritual. He is the intermediary between humans and divinities, the equivalent of the Hermes of the Greeks, making all kinds of feats possible, which is why he is highly respected.

His personality is understood as someone who, although playful and mischievous, is fair, faithful and true to his word. When his end of the bargain is done right, he really does his part. Exu is very dear to Candomblé and his fame always precedes him.

Jurema is a typically northeastern religion, which has a concept very similar to the Yoruba. Those who are devoted to this religion are called juremeiro and their influences are mainly in indigenous shamanism and pajelança.

Also known as Catimbó, the religion brings Exu as an entity responsible for helping the left line, coordinating the work done. Its representation may be similar to that of Candomblé, as it is understood as a large and unique entity, different from Umbanda.

Using the religious basis of Quimbanda, the exus in Umbanda are understood as the ‘street people’ who help in carrying out work done for orixás. These street people are made up of exus, who are male entities who, after being incarnated, work on the evolution of other human beings.

When these entities are female, they are known as pombagiras and their functions are determined according to each orixá for whom they ‘work’, the only difference is that, when they were earthly beings, they were women. In general, the mission of the exus and pombagiras is very beautiful.

Ogun is the warrior orixá, known for his strength and courage and, like most of them, has his exus. The Exus of Ogum are even well known in Umbanda. They are: Tranca Ruas das Almas, Exu Veludo, Exu Tira-Toco, Exu Porteira, Exu Limpa-Tudo, Exu Tranca-Gira and, finally, Exu Tira-Teima.
