Dry shampoo saves your hair on the busiest days

Only those who have oily hair know how difficult it is to keep their hair clean and looking dull. Therefore, a lot of time is spent between the ritual of washing the hair, drying it, and in many cases even performing the flat iron or babyliss process.

However, the cosmetics industry, thinking about these problems faced by many people, created the dry shampoo. The product comes in a spray bottle, does not wet the hair and is applied to the strands through jets of “powder”.

This product is certainly not intended for a real cleaning of the hair and scalp, but to provide a clean appearance to the locks. With this feature, the product is an important ally for busy days that do not allow for more time to be invested in a beauty ritual.

Dry shampoo can be essential for women who have always wanted to cut bangs, but oily hair has always been a limiting factor, but it can also optimize the time of those women who have risked cutting, but are currently hostages of intense hair washing.

Excessive washing can also fade colored strands. In this situation, the shampoo can act as a color extender, as it avoids frequent washing. This product has been a trend abroad for a long time and is now also available in Brazil to make life easier for many women, even more so due to the hot climate of our country, a factor that does not cooperate with oily hair.

The product has been constantly improved and new versions have been launched, such as those specifically for dark hair, those indicated to create volume and those packaged in smaller bottles, suitable for travel or to carry in a handbag. The matte effect is also a highlight of the dry shampoo, which can also work as a finishing touch to the hairstyle.

How dry shampoo works and how to use it

The high point of the product is precisely in the absorption of oil that is exerted by the “powder” that is sprayed at the root of the hair. The hair becomes opaque, looking clean and with the pleasant odor that the product offers, so it will be imperceptible that your hair has not been washed.

When applying, it is worth paying more attention to areas where the oiliness is more intense and where it is more apparent, such as on the sides of the head for example. The application process is very fast and can be done in a few minutes. See the steps below to learn how to use dry shampoo correctly:

  1. Shake the product can for a few seconds.
  2. Divide the hair into strands.
  3. Apply the product to the hair at an average distance of 30cm.
  4. Let the product act for a few moments.
  5. Massage the scalp so that the product spreads.
  6. Brush your hair to remove excess product from the strands.

9 dry shampoo questions and answers

When knowing this product, many doubts may arise, especially regarding its use, indications and limitations. The product is very democratic and easy to use, but it is important to emphasize that if strange symptoms appear and persist, it is essential to seek help from a specialist.

With the collaboration of the dermatologist Thais Aparecida Oliveira Rodrigues, professor of the postgraduate course in dermatology at the Institute of Research and Medical Education – IPEMED, we prepared this series of questions and answers to solve the main doubts regarding the use of this product that conquered the Brazilians.

1. Can dry shampoo replace traditional shampoo?

Thais Rodrigues: No, it is important to say that the hair needs to be washed with water, shampoo and conditioner, suitable for the main needs of each type of hair, but dry shampoo can be a great ally for those sporadic situations in which it is not possible to wash the hair with water. This type of shampoo reduces the apparent oiliness of the wires, disguises odors and promotes more movement and volume to the hair. It is ideal for that last-minute appointment, as it provides lightness and freshness to the strands.

2. Can I use dry shampoo every day?

Thais Rodrigues: The ideal is to maintain a hair care routine, washing with water and shampoo on alternate days, and reserve the dry shampoo for those days that are more rushed, or when the hair has gained an oily appearance before the next wash. Therefore, as long as these precautions are respected, it can be used as often as desired. Not maintaining this routine of cleaning the wires can cause flaking, itching and even dermatitis on the scalp.

3. Can I use dry shampoo right after washing my hair with traditional shampoo?

Thais Rodrigues: There is no need, as the main function of dry shampoo is to remove excess oil from the hair, but it can also provide volume and movement to the strands, if used correctly and with the strands already dry.

4. Can it be used on any type of hair, such as dry hair?

Thais Rodrigues: Yes, it can be used on all types of hair, but with caution, observing if the result was what was expected for that type of hair. Normally, it is a great ally for those who have oily hair or hair with oily roots and dry ends, as it efficiently helps to reduce this oiliness without drying the wires, so it does not prevent it from being used on dry hair.

5. Can it be used by people with dandruff?

Thais Rodrigues: Dandruff is caused by a disorder of the scalp and must be treated properly. The use of dry shampoo in these cases can make the flaking even more evident, so it should be used on a healthy scalp, without irritation, flaking or other injuries.

6. Can it harm those who have hair loss?

Thais Rodrigues: Hair loss can have several causes and must be carefully analyzed by the doctor, therefore, if used sporadically and correctly, keeping a distance of 15 to 20 centimeters away from the hair, avoiding the obstruction of the pores and maintaining the traditional cleaning of the wires, dry shampoo is not capable of causing or accelerating the hair loss.

7. What is the difference between regular talc and dry shampoo?

Thais Rodrigues: They have a similar function, but the dry shampoo was developed with a smoother and less aggressive composition, in order to leave less residue and avoid clogging the pores.

8. Can a flat iron be used after using dry shampoo?

Thais Rodrigues: The ideal is to do the desired procedure, such as the flat iron, before applying the dry shampoo, as it ensures more movement and volume to the wires. It is widely used by hairdressers to finish hairstyles.

9. Does anyone with very dark hair need to take any other precautions (to prevent it from looking gray)?

Thais Rodrigues: Yes, there is already dry shampoo on the market for different hair tones. However, some care must be observed to not leave residues and consequently avoid the gray aspect in the wires. The jets must be made in the direction of the root, obeying the indicated distance. Use a towel to remove the film that may form and the hair dryer at cold temperature can also help to remove excess product.
