Discover the story of Lorraine Warren, the woman who inspired the character of Vera Farmiga in “The Conjuring”

Lorraine was born on January 31, 1927 in Connecticut, USA, and discovered what would be paranormal abilities at age 7, when she began to see lights around certain people. Not knowing what they really meant, one day little Lorraine dared to say to one of the nuns who worked at the school where she studied:

“Your lights are brighter than those of the Mother Superior.”

The nun looked at the girl disconcerted, not understanding what she was referring to. Later, Lorraine understood that those lights were people’s auras, and from the unfriendly reaction of the nun she spoke to, she understood that this was no ordinary gift. For that reason, and for fear of being misunderstood, she didn’t tell anyone else about what she could see.

Everything changed when, at age 16, Lorraine met Ed Warren, who would become her husband. At the time, he was working in the cinema that the young woman frequented. After talking a few times, Ed asked Lorraine on a date. It was a relationship between teenagers like any other, until one day, after dating for some time, Ed decided to open his heart to Lorraine. He admitted, to the girl’s surprise, that he saw ghosts. What Ed didn’t expect was that his girlfriend would reveal her gift of clairvoyance: Lorraine also opened up and said that she not only saw ghosts, but talked to them. Ed eventually concluded that fate had worked to bring Lorraine into her life.

Ed and Lorraine got married and had a daughter. For a living, they investigated houses that were reputed to harbor hauntings so Ed would paint them, as he was an artist. Lorraine accompanied him on visits, and they both stood on the sidewalk while he screened all the spirits he saw coming and going. After arousing the owners’ curiosity (let’s face it, it must be very strange to see people staring at their house), Lorraine approached them and showed them the paintings made by her husband, explaining that the inspiration for those works had come from the ghosts Ed saw there. inside. It was common for property owners, after the initial scare, to invite the couple to come in and investigate further.

That was the impetus they needed to create the New England Society for Psychical Investigation, based on the investigation of paranormal phenomena from a scientific perspective. Nurses, doctors, investigators and even police officers have volunteered to work for free in the non-profit society. And so the couple went on to visit more and more haunted places, Lorraine as the clairvoyant and Ed as the demonologist. He, by the way, became the first person authorized to perform the office without being a Catholic priest.

In 1970, when the couple was already well-known, two nursing students sent Lorraine and Ed a doll that would later become a frequent character in the Warren-inspired movies: Annabelle. The young women explained that the doll used to appear in different corners of the house where they lived without anyone touching it. In addition, they said they believed that the object was taken over by the spirit of a girl, and that the couple should treat the doll as if it were a normal person.

Initially, the students decided to please the supposed spirit, treating it like a child, but soon they began to hear noises on the walls. Afterwards, the boyfriend of one of them started having nightmares, dreaming that he was being attacked. When he woke up, the young man had real wounds. The Warrens explained to the students that Annabelle didn’t exist. According to the couple, ghosts would be unable to possess objects, something that only demons could do. Therefore, the right thing was to get rid of the doll as soon as possible, in case they didn’t want to suffer serious damage.

Ed and Lorraine took the doll home and, on the way, noticed that the car they were in started to break down, almost causing an accident. Realizing that the doll was looking for a way to hurt them, the two decided to lock it in a glass box, putting a sign on the front that it was forbidden to touch it.

Today, the doll is an important “item” in the Museum of Occultism, where all the objects that the couple found in their work are located and that represent a danger to society for allegedly being possessed. Among these objects are from devilish masks to toys and wedding dresses. Some of the items have a creepy appearance, while others look as innocent as a child’s doll.

The case that would make the Warrens very well known was that of the Rhode Island house, which would later inspire the film saga. Invocation of Evil🇧🇷 The Perron family claimed to live in the house haunted by the ghost of a 19th century witch named Bathsheba. The witch would have sacrificed her own son and then committed suicide, all with the aim of bewitching the property and preventing other people from living there. Reports were that the Perrons had already called a priest to exorcise the house, as they had begun to suffer physical damage from the spirits.

After a long journey working together, Ed died in 2006, while Lorraine passed away on April 20, 2019, surrounded by her loved ones.
