According to scientists, this happens because the sun reaches its highest point in the sky, also known as ‘sunrise’. It is as if it were exactly straight and prevented the formation of shadows on people, vehicles, buildings and trees. And this only happens in Macapá for 2 reasons: the city is exactly in the middle of the planet and is cut by the Equator Line. This line, of course, is imaginary, and it divides the Earth’s Northern and Southern Hemispheres.
Called the equinox, it even became a tourist attraction and the title of “city in the middle of the world” and became law. In addition to being accompanied by students from different schools, it is also such a curious fact that it draws the attention of people from all over Brazil and the world. It takes place on a few days in March, in the transition from summer to autumn, and in September, which marks the end of winter and the arrival of spring. On these days both night and day time are practically the same, with about 12 hours of darkness and 12 hours of clear sky.

A monument 30 meters high was created so that tourists can follow the moment when the sun is exactly in that position. It is called Ground Zero and has a large circle in the middle, making the sun exactly ‘inside’ it at times of equinox and has a large line painted on the ground, allowing people to be at the same time with one foot in the North of the Earth, and another in the South. Its strategic location also allowed the total eclipse of the sun to be better visualized.
