Breakup: tips to get over it and help you get through it

Love relationships are an important part of our lives, so the end of them can bring frustration, low self-esteem and even leave us “without direction”. But, calm down! We talked to psychologist Sandra Escame, who gave us tips on what to do in the face of a breakup. Check out what we separate to help you:

How to get over a breakup in a healthy way

We know how painful a breakup can be, so we brought you tips that can help you get through it in the best way. Lift your head and come with us!

accept the end

The first tip is simple, but very important! If you chose to end the relationship, respect the decision. Sandra says: “being persistent is different from being nonconformist”.

do something new

Why not step out of your comfort zone and find a different activity? It’s time to rediscover yourself!

An end is also a beginning

Keep in mind that new things and people can happen in your life if you let them.

Don’t exist because the other exists

Sandra points out the importance of maintaining other life goals besides the relationship. Getting over the breakup tends to be more difficult in cases where there is a dependency on the partner.

keep your activities

During the relationship (and after the breakup as well), be sure to have your personal projects, hobbies, sports… This helps you not to depend on the other.

don’t walk away

Sandra says that when entering a relationship, we often make the mistake of pulling away from the people who make up our social support networks. It makes us feel alone, especially after a breakup. So try not to get away from friends and family during the relationship.

work on self-knowledge

The end is a time to question your needs, desires, choices… Get to know yourself!

Life goes on

If you want to spend some time “enjoying” your grief, that’s fine. But don’t do it too long! Sandra indicates that, even if you don’t want to, you should try to appropriate what belongs to you and over which you have control: your life!

Invest in self-care

The most important person in your life is you! So have a self-care routine: do what you like and that raises your self-esteem.

If needed, get help

Don’t hesitate to ask for help! “A professional can help you understand and be able to do the above items!”, comments the psychologist.

Breaking up is a difficult time, but time and these tips will help you in the overcoming process. Remember to focus on what matters most: you!

5 Things Not to Do After a Breakup

Okay, and what shouldn’t I do after it’s over? We help you! Check out these tips from psychologist Sandra Escame:

  1. Don’t go looking for another relationship: although there is a theory that one love heals with another, Sandra explains that it’s not the time to invest in someone else, but in yourself!
  2. Don’t keep looking for the other’s life: it can be difficult not to feel angry, but avoid feeding that feeling. Sandra says: “Anger (more than hate) does not allow us to forget someone!”
  3. Don’t look for culprits: the “bankruptcy” of a relationship is usually the responsibility of both, so don’t spend your energy looking for culprits.
  4. Don’t hold on to the past: avoid regretting what happened. Focus on what you can and want to do now.
  5. Don’t smother your feelings: try to understand what you’re feeling. It’s a moment of reflection, and it can help you get to know yourself better.
