We women are subjected to an overwhelming standard that dictates what we should wear, how much we should weigh, how feminine we should be. This leads us to a devastating feeling when we access social media and realize that we don’t fit the “publishing norms”, but feminism and the Body Positive Movement came to prove us otherwise.
With that in mind, we created this guide on Body Positive, in order to explain the movement to you, introduce you to women who love their bodies and give you tips on how to become one of them too.
Body Positive: meaning
The term “Body Positive” comes from the union of the words “body” and “positive”, that is, it is about the intention to cast a positive look at your body, whatever it may be. But, in fact, its meaning goes far beyond that.
The Body Positive Movement encourages a grateful look at ourselves. It encourages us to value the best we have and stop giving so much importance to defects. By the way, what are “defects”? And who sees them?
It’s exactly the kind of question that Body Positive brings us: sometimes, what you see in me as a flaw, is what makes me feel more beautiful! Thus, this movement can be summarized in the idea that it does not matter what society says about your body, what matters is what you think about it.
The philosophy of the Body Positive movement
We know: it is not an easy process to come to see as beautiful what makes most people turn up their noses. However, it is possible for women to help each other in this time-consuming but worthwhile task. So, check out some points that guide the Body Positive movement:
1. Don’t compare yourself to people
Avoid creating comparisons between yourself and others. This can put people in boxes. The truth is that no one can be the same and, let’s face it, having different details can be very interesting too.
2. Reflect on your own qualities
Everyone has flaws, but how about reversing the order and making a list of strengths? Try to identify your positive characteristics and start to value them. This can make that adage true that for others to think we’re beautiful, we have to think we’re wonderful first.
3. Rethinking toxic friendships
Do your friends look for faults in you? Criticize your clothes? Do they think about your body and make you think there’s something wrong with you? There’s probably something wrong with your friendships, that’s right! Keep close to people who encourage you to be what you want to be. In addition to boosting your self-esteem, it will be easier to identify your qualities with positive people around you.
4. Say no to hate speech
Against others and against yourself! To begin to see your beauty, try to see the beauty of others as well. You will notice how anyone can have something good to offer and that there can be beauty in everything!
5. Avoid following profiles that show the current standard
This can damage self-esteem. It’s very easy to fault our body when everything we see fits the pattern. This complements the first tip, as comparisons to other people can prevent us from being what we want to be.
6. Follow Body Positives profiles
How about following more people who inspire you to accept yourself? There are many Body Positive women on social media who can encourage you to feel beautiful. Further on, you will meet some of them.
By putting these tips into practice, you will be close to adhering to Body Positive and, of course, this will bring only benefits.
