Believe me: these 11 teams have already played in Série A of the Brazilian Championship

Today it is not difficult to memorize the regulations and say who are the 20 participants of the first division of the Brazilian Football Championship. But it was not always so. Between the 1970s and 1990s, mainly, the regulation changed from year to year, as well as the number of competitors, and understanding was never easy. At that time, it was normal for teams that were not well known to enter the dispute.

To remember some of these teams that have already played among the great ones in the country, the incredible.club researched the Brazilian Championship year by year and shows here some teams that you won’t believe have already played in the first division.

Ceub (Federal District)

Believe me: a university team managed to reach the first division of the Brazilian Championship. Ceub is the acronym for Unified Teaching Center of Brasilia. The team played 3 editions of the Brasileiro, from 1973 to 1975, when it won Corinthians and Cruzeiro.

Colorado (Paraná)

He doesn’t even exist anymore. In 1989, Colorado merged with Pinheiros and gave rise to Paraná Club🇧🇷 The team experienced its peak in the 1970s and early 1980s, having won its only title in Paraná in 1980. It was also state runner-up 4 times and ranked 19th in the 1979 Brazilian Championship.

Railway Sports (Espírito Santo)

Don Bosco (Mato Grosso)

In 1977 the championship had 62 participants! And the flashlight was Dom Bosco, from Cuiabá. In 13 matches, he won one (1-0 against Avai) and conceded 32 goals. The following year, however, it was in the ‘honorable’ 31st position among 74 (!) teams.

Guará (Federal District)

And we arrived in 1979, the height of the “one more team at Nacional” madness. There were 94 teams in the dispute, and four of them did not score a single goal. Guará finished in last place, with only two draws. Curiosity: Chapecoense, founded in 1973, ranked 93rd.

Moto Club (Maranhão)

If you don’t know, you might even find the name strange, but we are talking about one of the most traditional football clubs in the Northeast. Moto Club arrived in Brasileiro in 1973 and played in several editions of the championship in the 1970s and 1980s. In 2018, it was eliminated in the third phase of Série D.

National (Amazon)

Although it hosted games from the 2014 World Cup, the State of Amazonas has little tradition in high-level football. In 1972, Nacional was the first Amazonian to play in the first division of the newly created Campeonato Brasileiro. It finished 21st, having beaten Corinthians and Cruzeiro.

Sergipe (Sergipe)

Also in 1972, Sergipe became the first team from Sergipe to play in the elite of Brazilian football. There wasn’t much to celebrate, though. It was in last place, with 2 wins in 25 games.

Tiradentes (Piauí)

Uberaba (Minas Gerais)

In the 1968 Mineiro Championship, Uberaba lost to Cruzeiro by 10 to 0. For 8 years later, it was disputing the first division of the Brazilian. If it didn’t do well, it wasn’t a total embarrassment either: it ranked 41st out of 54 teams, with 3 wins in 12 games. He played for another five years in the Brazilian first division, until 1983.

São João Union (Araras-SP)

Perhaps União’s greatest achievement was to reveal Roberto Carlos, left-back who defended Palmeiras, Real Madrid and the Brazilian National Team. In 1992, it reached the first national division, but collapsed in the late 1990s and ended activities in 2015.

And you, do you remember other teams that today are very small nationally or are extinct and have already played in the first division of the Brazilian Championship? Tell us by leaving a comment!
