What was the Assumption of Our Lady?

The Assumption of Our Lady is celebrated on August 15th in the Catholic calendar and marks the Virgin Mary’s ascent into heaven. This is because Mary would have died in her sleep, approximately between 43 and 50 AD, and when she woke up, she was taken to heaven by angels commissioned by God to take the mother of Christ to Himself.

Tradition has it that Mary was 60 years old when Jesus Christ, her son, ascended to heaven. Among her main sufferings in life, doubts about her husband, poverty, the loss of her Son, his separation at the beginning of her preaching, the death in the public square of Jesus Christ would have caused much pain in Mary’s heart.

But, according to the studies of Saint Bernard and Saint Francis de Sales, the Passion, Calvary and death of Jesus Christ, his beloved son, was the main cause of his death and the consequent Assumption of Our Lady.

One of the most probable theses regarding the Assumption of Our Lady gives an account of her death before the dispersion of the Apostles and Herod Agrippa’s persecution of them. Her assumption would have taken place on Mount Zion, the same place where Jesus Christ ministered the mysteries of the Eucharist and where the Holy Spirit descended on the Apostles.

According to theologians, what differentiates the two events is the fact that Mary only had access to Heaven after her death and resurrection. She didn’t have the freedom to go to Heaven while she was still alive, as she saw fit. In other words, she did not ascend to Heaven by her own power, being led up from here by angels of the Lord.

The term ascension of Jesus Christ is due to the fact that he had the power to go to Paradise by his own power and will. That is why we speak of the Ascension of Our Lord and the Assumption of Our Lady. The ascension refers to the self-will, while the assumption has to do with the help of external agents so that Mary could be taken to Heaven.

Origin of the celebration of the Assumption of Our Lady

It was on November 1, 1950 that Pope Pius XII proclaimed August 15 as the day of the Assumption of Our Lady. This feat was proclaimed through the Apostolic Constitution Munificentissimus in Rome.

Before that, the oldest tradition to celebrate this date came from Saint Epifanio, who between the years 374 and 377, composed poems about the Assumption of Our Lady.

Since then, the celebration has been one of the great Catholic festivals and also in cities that chose to consider the 15th of August a holiday to celebrate this sacred fact.
