According to scholars of the subject, it can tempt and seduce through laziness and vanity that rely only on reason, science and philosophy.
It is said that this character was the goddess Astarte and that in some translations, throughout history, the name Astharoth was attributed to her to pluralize, assuming herself to be a deity contrary to God in the Catholic faith, and therefore seen as a demon.
Saint Bartholomew is considered his adversary, who managed to overcome his temptations.
Related names
In many ancient cultures this character was associated with the Phoenician goddess Astarte, who symbolized the worship of Mother Nature, life and fertility. She was also associated with love and the pleasures of the flesh.
In other mythologies she was known as Ishtar, Venus, Stara, Esther and Athair, equivalent to the goddess Aphrodite of the Greeks who represented lust, fertility and life.
Legend of Astaroth
Created to possess wisdom and the ability to know human and divine destiny, and also be able to manipulate its lines, it was admired for its power and beauty in the sky.
However, knowing that he was the bearer of great beauty and power, he felt important to such an extent that he thought he was superior to other beings of light.
He used his power to see and do more than he should and knew dark powers full of evil.
Being knowledgeable and wise, he coveted all power for himself and the destruction of the one who created him to hold all the thrones, both in heaven and hell.
His excessive ambition and these terrible feelings were the reason for him to be expelled from the palace and divided into two parts: male and female.
The male part was left in the abyss to suffer forever and the female part, known as Astoreth, was hidden in a hidden and deep space of each human being.
Many call this feminine part wisdom, considering it a weapon of liberation and rebellion. (See article: Asmodeus)
Since then, that masculine part called Astaroth has been searching for the part that is missing and that humanity possesses, to obtain all his power, achieve his revenge and restore his position as prince of the Thrones among the angels.
Old stories indicate that the day these two parties meet, the war between heaven and hell, between angels and demons, will begin.
Power of Astaroth
This character can observe and know the past, present and future. He has the power to seduce through laziness and vanity.
He can answer any question in all languages and codes, he accepts the offerings that are given to him. His assistants are: Aamon, Pruslas and Barbatos.
Astaroth and humanity
He found in humanity knowledge such as astrology, philosophy, medicine and sciences, helping scholars to conquer the vast world of knowledge, and thus find their missing part.
According to popular culture, he is personified by a kind-looking woman, keeping the secret of her powers and also as a naked man, with two pairs of large black wings, similar to those of a bat, and small ones with white feathers.
He displays a crown on his head, a snake in his left hand, dragon feet and always mounted on a creature that is not from this world, with some features similar to a wolf, because even when he has wings he does not usually fly and moves on his mount.
Symbol that represents it
The symbol that represents him is made up of:
Two circles: one interior and one exterior.
An inscription in the space between the two circumferences, which states the following: Come Astaroth – Come Astaroth – Come Astaroth.
They say that this symbol provides luck for those who decide to follow it, and some have the firm belief that dipping it in dark ink or blood will seal the pacts made.
There are many beliefs and practices that involve this type of emblem, used mainly by those who have decided to abandon the faith. (See article: Star of David)
Astaroth in the Bible
Some scholars claim that this character was originally Asherah. Ishtar, Athihirat known as the mother of all gods and was worshiped in Mesopotamia, Babylon and at some point in ancient Egypt.
However, in the Bible the name Astaroth is attributed to him, a transcription that was allegedly altered by adding some vowels from the term of Hebrew origin. boset which means shame.
Apparently this type of variations in the transcriptions were very common, it was considered a custom of the rabbis, with the intention of reducing prestige and associating the divinities of other beliefs and cults with evil, dark and impure acts.
This character is mentioned in the Bible of Hebrew origin as Ashtoreth to speak of the singular form and Ashtaroth in the plural, when it was indicated that they were several images or statues.
This last form was the one that was carried or represented in the ancient Greek and Latin translations of the Bible, without realizing that it was the way to refer to it in the plural.
In the so-called Testament of Solomon from the beginning of the century and which is attributed to the king of Israel who bore this name, Asteraoth is named, describing him as an angelic being who opposes the devil.
However, it is worth remembering that even though this text is associated with the Old Testament, it is not seen or considered as one of the scriptures by Jews and Christians.
The cult and adoration of this goddess was also common among the inhabitants of Canaan, an area neighboring Israel, which is why some areas of this country also venerated her.
In the Bible there is reference to this cult, indicating that she was called the Queen of heaven (Jeremiah 44,17). Basically the festivities and celebrations included bonfires, the preparation of dishes and the sacramental cake that imitated her appearance.
In addition, religious rituals were carried out where drinks offered in their honor were poured on the altars or the ground, and incense was lit for good fortune.
This type of cult was carried out for long periods of time in different areas, and over time it became the same as other cults, surrounded by commercial and religious interests.
However, it was losing strength, until its total disappearance, since the Bible warned that Yahweh did not like them and indicated to Solomon that this type of customs would bring misfortunes, calamities and havoc to the next generations of Israel (1 Kings 11:1-12,33).
In later times with the different reforms and changes, especially that of Josiah known as the last good King of the Israelites, this cult disappeared.
Many indicate that Astaroth was originally this pagan Goddess and that, due to intentional changes in some scriptures, she is transformed into the character of this article.
