Have you heard about SH’BAM? This is the newest way to exercise in a fun and group way and, therefore, has conquered the academies of several cities in the country.
Marcia Angeli, technical assistant at SH’BAM in Brazil, explains that SH’BAM™ is a dance class characterized by trendy music and beats, simple and sensational movements. “It’s the perfect way to train and let the ‘star’, the dancer inside you manifest – even if dancing is still a challenge for you,” she says.
According to Marcia, the SH’BAM™ class allows you to be the “big star” of your “dance show”.
“The expression SH’BAM is ‘slang’ meaning something as cool as ‘fireworks’. An explosion of light… A star is born and ‘SH’BAMMMM’… like the explosion of fireworks”, adds the technical assistant.
How is the SH’BAM class?
According to Marcia, SH’BAM is a 45-minute class in which the person will be sweating and smiling. “It has a friendly, fun atmosphere where participants feel welcome and know it’s safe to try the moves without embarrassing themselves,” she says.
The moves are simple so everyone can participate and the music leads the whole experience. “We SH’BAM teachers and students feel the fun of getting carried away and experience the freedom and joy of dancing with a group of friends,” she adds.
Another super positive point is that a SH’BAM class has an average caloric expenditure of 500 kcal in 45 minutes. “This shows that dancing can burn a lot of calories and help you get in great physical shape… All this while dancing, sweating and smiling a lot”, highlights Marcia.
Benefits of the SH’BAM class
In addition to feeling free to dance and being carried away by the moment, movement and music, SH’BAM™ classes will develop in all participants the benefits of physical training. Marcia highlights them below:
- Lowers blood pressure;
- Decreases total cholesterol;
- Increases aerobic capacity;
- Improves heart function;
- Decreased resting heart rate;
- Improves the process of mobilization and utilization of fat;
- Increases VO2 – greater efficiency in the absorption and use of oxygen;
- Improves coordination and agility;
- Improves bone density;
- It’s an excellent way to activate brain function – which can make all the difference with advancing age;
- Burns up to 500 kcal in 45 minutes.
Who can practice SH’BAM?
According to Marcia, everyone can practice SH’BAM. “People of all ages and physical abilities. There is no contraindication in this regard. You don’t even need to know how to dance, just like music and movement and play on the SH’BAM dancefloor: fun and great cardio training guaranteed,” she says.
As with any activity, pregnant women must have medical clearance to practice the class safely. This is the only restriction, as explained by Marcia.
Zumba X SH’BAM
The SH’BAM method was created by Body Systems Latin America. Therefore, the real class must be taught by a Body Systems-trained teacher at a licensed gym.
The method is similar to Zumba, but the difference is mainly in the rhythms. Zumba encourages sensuality, with hot rhythms – such as salsa, merengue, cumbia and reggaeton – typical of Latin countries. In SH’BAM’s class, the sound is more focused on pop, hip hop and other very current music. And the choreography is based on the rhythms with simple movements.
Tips for SH’BAM classes
Below, Marcia gives some tips for those who want to practice SH’BAM:
- For best results, the recommendation is to attend class two to three times a week.
- A rest day between classes or doing some resistance or flexibility exercise will provide balanced body training.
- After 12 weeks a good cardiovascular foundation may have been built and then the practitioner can choose to take up to 4 classes per week depending on their goal.
- It is recommended not to take the class fasting to avoid lack of energy or even hypoglycemia, especially at times of peak intensity of the class.
- Wear light, comfortable clothes to allow your body to perspire and thus maintain a normal temperature.
- Respect your physical conditioning and avoid excessive fatigue, resting whenever you feel the need.
There are plenty of good reasons to practice SH’BAM classes! So research if any gym in your city offers the method and start as soon as possible! Leave the shame aside, after all, the purpose of the class is really to make the participants have fun, get “taken” by the music, as if they were at a party!
