Acro Yoga: Movements in the body and mind

A fusion of heaven, earth and love… This is how practitioners usually define Acro Yoga – a modality that combines Yoga, Acrobatics and Thai Massage.

“With Yoga, we have millennial and spiritual wisdom; Acrobatics brings us power and dynamics and with Thai Massage we have the kindness of donation”, explains Elaine Lilli, Bachelor’s and Master’s Degree in Physical Education, Yoga instructor, acupuncturist and coordinating teacher at Acro Yoga Brasil.

Innovative and fun, the sport has been practiced in California, Spain, Canada, India and, a few years ago, in Brazil.

The practice

Elaine Lilli points out that, in the Acro Yoga Brasil method, a class can vary from one hour to one and a half hours. “In it, Asanas (Yoga postures) are practiced individually or in pairs to improve movement; Thai Massage techniques preliminary to Acro Yoga postures or later – with the aim of stretching and relaxing the practitioner’s muscles, as well as bringing benefits to the mind”, she says.

The acrobatic elements appear constantly during practice. The class, still according to the professional, is emphasized in the movements of Acro Asanas in Pairs and, for more advanced students, in trios, depending on the size of the group.

“The movements are carried out step by step until the practitioner masters the technique and can even create new postures”, explains the teacher. “However, we have some stipulated series of gradual difficulty levels, so that the student can progress safely and relaxed”, emphasizes teacher Elaine.

It is worth noting that, at various times in the practice of Acro Yoga, the person has the sensation of flying, which provides a feeling of freedom and interaction with the air space. Asanas performed in mid-air favor range of motion, helping flexibility and relaxation of the body’s muscles.

Another interesting point is that, in Acro Yoga, the practitioner learns to get in and out of a posture standing upside down on any support element. Inversion Asanas favor concentration and energetically unlock the cervical spine and head region. The goal is to provide people with the opportunity to see life in new ways and from new angles.

The Thai Massage in Acro Yoga is responsible for developing the perception of touch, which can be performed with both hands and feet and elbows. With the refined touch, the practitioner finds it easier to lead the partner, distributing his body weight with the partner’s weight.

Benefits of Acro Yoga

Elaine Lilli highlights that the main benefits offered by Acro Yoga are:

  • Communication, interactivity and team spirit;
  • Concentration, focus and body awareness;
  • Development of the main physical abilities, among them: strength, flexibility, balance and agility;
  • Well-being: muscle relaxation, mind and breathing control;
  • Increased disposition and postural alignment.

Public

Elaine Lilli explains that Acro Yoga classes are aimed at both practitioners and non-practitioners of Yoga. Children, teenagers and adults can participate. The person only needs to present good health conditions to practice physical activity of medium intensity and interest in the method.

But it is important to remember that people with back problems or other health problems, in general, need medical clearance for the activity.

“It is worth noting that, as Acro Yoga is an intense activity, when performed for beginner groups, the exercises are adapted so that everyone can practice and enjoy the benefits”, concludes the teacher.
