A Mexican freshwater paradise where the oldest organisms on the planet live

Among so many paradisiacal beaches in the Mexican Caribbean, there is one special one: Bacalar, a quiet town that has a lagoon famous for its variations of blue. So blue that it looks like the sea on a deserted island. Known as ‘the lagoon of 7 colors’, the region once belonged to the Mayans and was disputed by European pirates.

In addition to being a lost paradise (which is usually not on the list of places to be visited by Brazilians), it has a lot of history to tell the tourists who pass by. It is also a great itinerary option for those who want to escape the salt water of Cancún and Tulum, for example.

O awesome.club researched and found that the blue of the lagoon is not the effect of some social network filter or Photoshop. Therefore, we share some fun facts about this “Pueblo Mágico” (Magic City). Come with us!

Bacalar, in the Mayan language, means ‘surrounded by bamboo’

Bacalar Lagoon is 42 kilometers long and is famous for its 7 shades of blue. The color varies according to the depth. Don’t feel like going there and diving?

pirate channel

In the 18th century, English, Spanish and French pirates used the channel in the photo above to try to invade and dominate Bacalar. They also sought to control the traffic, through the canals, of boats carrying “Palo Tinte” — a tree appreciated at the time for giving rise to a dye. Today, the canal has turned into a tourist spot.

Dive in cenotes over 90 meters deep

The lagoon mixes with large cenotes, where professional or recreational diving is possible. These large craters are connected via underground water passages.

The photo above is of Cenote Azul. There are also three other cenotes in the region: Cocalitos, La Bruja and Esmeralda. Cenotes were used in some sacrificial rituals in the Mayan civilization.

São Felipe Castle

São Felipe Castle was built between 1725 and 1733 to protect the city from invaders. Today, it has become a museum with weapons, ammunition and utensils used at the time. Learn more about its history here.

Practice water sports in the lagoon

The activity costs, on average, 250 Mexican pesos (R$ 50) per person. It is worth taking the tour between 6 and 7 am to see the sunrise. Check here for other activities offered on site.

How to get to Bacalar

For those traveling from Brazil, the ideal is to go to Cancún and, from there, rent a car to get to this paradise. Another cheaper option, but also quite safe, is to go by bus with the ADO company. There are 350 kilometers from Cancún to Bacalar, that is, 5 hours of travel. The ticket costs around R$ 125 one way.
