97% of women have experienced harassment on public transport, survey finds

O sexual harassment it is a reality in the lives of most Brazilian women. 71% know a woman who has already suffered from abuse in public spaces and 97% claim to have been victims of harassment on means of transport🇧🇷

The numbers are part of a survey of 1081 women carried out by Patricia Galvao Institute and Locomotive Institute with support from Uber. They collected data on violence against women in transport that show that sexual harassment is still a challenge to be faced on a daily basis.

“The objective is to understand what are the obstacles that women face on a daily basis when they use transport to move around cities”, says MaĂra SaruĂŞ Machado, director of research at Instituto Locomotiva. “We want to raise society’s attention and use the study as an important tool to generate reflection on the problem”, she adds.

According to the survey, safety is what women are most concerned about when it comes to getting around. For 72% of respondents, the time to get to work influences the decision to accept or remain in a job. Still, 46% don’t feel confident using transportation without experiencing sexual harassment.

“The survey confirms that, unfortunately, sexual harassment in transport is part of the routine of Brazilian women. For them, who mostly study and work outside the home, safety while traveling is an essential issue. It is important not only to apply the law that criminalizes this practice, but also to develop policies and mechanisms for prevention, to ensure that Brazilian women can feel safe when exercising their right to come and go, also guaranteeing their right to a life without violence”, says Jacira Melo, executive director of Instituto Patrícia Galvão.
