What kind of delinquent doesn’t dream of committing “a perfect crime” and getting away with it? They plan carefully, think down to the smallest details, prepare alibis and commit crimes with full confidence that they will get away with punishment. But they do not have an insignificant error, as is the case with the protagonists of our post.
O awesome.club believes that even in the most sophisticated criminal plans, there will always be a gap, and if not, fate itself will interfere and justice will triumph.
1. Passion for tattoos
On several occasions, criminals have been captured for their desire for “memories” of the crime scene. But Anthony Garcia managed to go further. He killed a man during the liquor store robbery and even disappeared without leaving any clues or evidence. His impunity lasted 4 years, until he was arrested driving with an expired license. At the police station, they took pictures of the attacker, imposed a fine and released him.
Later, one of the officers, familiar with the liquor store robbery case, checked a stack of photos taken at the police station and was surprised to find in one of the images a tattoo that accurately depicted the crime scene. There was even the shop sign and an inscription that a murder had been committed.
2. Love for cats
If you’ve ever been in the same room with a cat, then you know that this animal’s fur is very sticky. That’s exactly what ruined David Hilder, who tried to hide his friend’s murder. At the crime scene, the forensic team was able to find cat hair.
By the way, it was the first time in the history of England that the DNA of a cat served as proof of the accused’s guilt.
3. Lucky brooch
The murder of Susan Reinert and the disappearance of her two children, Michael and Karen, aged 10 and 11, deeply shocked Americans. The crime would have gone unpunished, had it not been for a small detail: a green brooch with the letter P that the girl bought during a trip and always carried with her for good luck.
This brooch was found under the passenger seat of the car of William S. Bradford Jr., the school’s English teacher. Unfortunately, the court was unable to discover the fate of the missing children, but thanks to this small detail and the testimony of a colleague, the killer was brought to justice.
4. Social networks
In Cali, Colombia, two men pretended to be visitors to a cybercafé, grabbed weapons and robbed the establishment. The partners gave a clean blow, left no fingerprints, no evidence, no footage on the security camera.
But one of the criminals, killing time before the start of the “operation”, entered his Facebook account and forgot to log out. The personal page was filled in so correctly that it even indicated the delinquent’s home address.
5. Preference for luxury accessories
In the note there are detailed instructions that the child’s father must leave the package with the ransom money in the yard of the old factory, and remember that this is the only way to save his child.
In the 1920s, Richard Loeb and Nathan Leopold, two high society young men, spoiled by their parents’ money and admirers of Nietzsche’s nihilistic theories, decided to challenge society by demonstrating that laws would have no authority over them. And they did it in a radical way: they killed a young man. They carefully planned the crime for 4 months and were certain that the drainage pipe near the railroad was a safe place to hide the body. They also decided to deceive the police and, for that, they sent a letter to the parents demanding the rescue of the deceased boy.
The problem is that the dead young man’s feet were left out of the tube. And the next morning, the workers found him. At the crime scene, police found glasses that were unusual but very expensive. The police discovered that, in the city, few of them had been sold, with a pair being bought by Nathan. The suspicions were confirmed by the analysis of the typewriters, since the examination confirmed that the letter had been typed with Richard’s.
6. Vanity and video games
At the end of the 20th century, a talented hacker named Max Butler had committed the biggest theft of credit card data. He managed to connect to the American Express system and steal over 2 million sets of bank card data. By selling this information to other criminals, he raised over 86 million dollars.
Surprisingly, he decided he had his future secured and lived a quiet life with his girlfriend. It was like that for a few years, until his former partner in crime, Jonathan Giannonelas, fell into the hands of the FBI. Naturally, he didn’t know the hacker’s name or face, but he remembered a fact from his biography: Butler told him he was one of the two prime suspects in the Half-Life-2 game theft. Of course, the police had kept the suspects’ names and details.
7. Arrogance and cards
Another example that shows that no one should boast of their achievements in crime. Susan Schwarz was shot at her home, but the police couldn’t find a single lead, so the case went unsolved. But the girl’s photo was part of a prison experiment: the government printed prisoners a deck of cards that contained information about victims of unsolved crimes, their phone number, and their reward.
The Schwarz case, like many others, was out of the picture. But it was soon discovered that his killer was already in prison for less serious crimes, and he had bragged to his cellmates how he had been immune from the crime.
8. Verbal errors
The first image is a photograph of Joey Martin from the high school graduation album. The second is from Alexander Barsky, one of the accused during the 2012 trial, 14 years after the murder was committed.
Sometimes a new look helps solve the case, not just the prison experiments. Sometimes an old case can even be reopened after examining the testimony in more detail. The same thing happened with the unsolved case of Joey Martin’s death in 1996. The boy secretly left his house to meet in the woods with his friends, but never returned.
Joey was declared missing, but the search operation failed and no traces of the body were found. During interrogations, his two friends claimed that Martin hadn’t even gone into the woods with them, he should have gone for a walk alone. The cops believed them, and besides, there was no evidence against the boys. It was not until 10 years later that a young detective reread the case and found that, in the text of the interrogation, the two young men, describing their actions that night, used the expression “all of us”. Who would use that expression when talking about two people? When the case was reopened in 2008, one of the friends confessed to having committed the murder and the second was later found guilty.
9. Fateful encounter
Zephany was just 3 days old when a stranger kidnapped her from the hospital while her mother was sleeping. This happened on April 30, 1997.
Sometimes it seems that fate itself interferes with solving crimes. A young couple named Nurse had their daughter Zephany kidnapped from the hospital by a woman dressed as a nurse. We could assume that it was about a mother who lost her child during childbirth, but couldn’t find the kidnapper, while her parents followed a desperate search and didn’t give up. A few years later, and still looking for the child, they had another daughter, Cassidy.
The girl grew up and transferred to a new school, where she became friends with a student who was four years older than her. All the classmates and even the teachers said that they looked incredibly alike. Cassidy told her parents about her new friend, and when they learned that the girl’s birthday coincided with Zephany’s, they got permission from the police to perform a DNA test. They turned out to be the closest relatives: thus, thanks to the occasion and the incomprehensible attraction, the sisters found each other.
