1. Children’s imagination

Until a certain age, children may not see the difference between fantasy and reality. That is why they are often convinced of the reality of events they themselves have invented. However, it is worth noting that if a child invented something for himself, he will not doubt its veracity, but if he hears something improbable from someone else, he will act like an adult: he will refuse to believe. After a series of tests, scientists came to the conclusion that the thin line between fiction and reality is clearly developed in the youngest because, at an early age, they cannot understand which knowledge is correct and which is not.

2. Absence of abstract concepts

It has also been shown that children under the age of 11 can only reflect on a specific reality, but are still unable to think abstractly.

Psychologist Rudolf Schaffer conducted an experiment in which he suggested that two groups of children find a place on their bodies where a third eye could be placed. In the first group, made up of 9-year-olds, all participants chose the forehead as an option, that is, the area where we already have two eyes. The second group, made up of 11-year-old children, was already able to reflect on the abstract. They began to offer completely different options, such as hands, which would help to see from the side and from the back.

3. Language learning

Learning languages ​​can be easy for little ones, while for adults this task requires much more effort. Linguist Noam Chomsky explains this issue by the fact that there is the so-called internalized grammar, integrated into the human brain, which connects the syntactic rules of all existing languages. In addition, millions of cells that are in a child’s mind are responsible for the perception and reproduction of speech. When learning a language, thanks to this, the child establishes associative connections at the neuronal level that form complex conducting systems. Such systems have just been formed after 10 years of age. Therefore, mastering a foreign language over time becomes more complicated as it requires more concentration.

4. Permanence of the object

Every parent who has played the famous disappearing game with their baby can see how upset the child is when mom or dad disappears from sight. This responds to the fact that, up to the age of 1 year, children are deeply convinced that an object they do not see disappears forever. Psychologist Jean Piaget developed a theory about the persistence of objects in which he showed that knowledge of the existence of objects outside our field of vision is acquired with age. But a small child does not yet have enough experience to understand this, so an object that he does not see, here and now, no longer exists.

5. Identification

Scientists claim that, due to lack of proper experience, a newborn does not distinguish faces. In addition, he does not perceive objects clearly, but fuzzy outlines.

In one of the experiments, it was shown that babies up to 6 months old are not able to distinguish faces of different people, but at 9 months they already adapt and begin to identify both people from their environment and strangers. And by the time they are 1 year old, their eyes focus and begin to see objects in a vivid and colorful way.

6. Reversibility

Up to a certain age, children have not yet formed the concept of reversibility. Therefore, if two glasses, different in size and volume, are placed in front of her, and the same amount of water is passed from one to another, the little one will be sure that the amount of liquid has increased. Up to age 7, children will be convinced that if the glass changes shape, so will the contents. In addition, it is estimated that up to a certain age, children are not able to combine the concepts of height and width, focusing their attention only on one of these two variables.

7. Draw

It is a well-known fact that, due to their underdeveloped fine motor skills, children work harder than adults because they still cannot hold a pencil firmly.

Furthermore, there is a curious fact that was discovered during an experiment. Children between 5 and 9 years old were asked to draw a cup that was placed in such a way that its handle could not be seen. Despite not fitting into the children’s field of vision, all children under 7 reflected what was missing in the drawing. Children over 7 years old drew the same, but without the handle.

Psychologists came to the conclusion that this is the main difference between a child and an adult. If a big person is asked to draw an object he sees, he draws it as he sees it. However, children can add elements that are not seen in their field of vision, but which they know should be there.

8. Notion of morality

Children have their own sense of morality, which differs from that of adults. The great ones know what is a good action and what is a bad one, and they also know the generally established norms (which they sometimes violate).

For children, in this sense, everything seems much easier. Initially, their behavior is based on avoiding punishment for one or another fact. As they grow up, they understand morality as behavior that will be rewarded later. Each stage of a child’s maturity will form the final moral arguments that most adults will ultimately adhere to.

Confirmation of this fact is supported by the results of a study in which children were asked the following question: “Which is worse: breaking a pair of glasses, but intentionally, or breaking several, by chance”. And the majority of children said that those who broke the most glasses acted worse, as they caused more damage than the one who broke only one.

9. Theory of mind

Theory of mind is about understanding that not everyone has your information and experience. For children, unlike adults, this pattern only comes with age.

This conclusion was reached after an experiment called “Sally Anne”. In a room, there are two adults and a child. While one of the big ones leaves the room, the other hides a toy. When the first adult returns to the environment, he asks the child where he should look for the object. Research showed that children under 3 years old indicated the actual location of the toy, regardless of the fact that the adult who returned did not know where it was hidden.
