8 Problems that hide behind bad body odor

Generally, the human body does not have a strong smell. This appears due to the action of bacteria, increased activity of sweat glands and sometimes as a result of some disease. The smell of sweat can reveal not only that it’s time to take a shower or buy a new deodorant. Sometimes it can indicate an incorrect lifestyle and excessive worries.

O awesome.club recommends paying attention to your scent so you don’t become indifferent to the important changes that can happen in your body.

1. Sticky sweat with a strong smell on the palms

Stress causes the body to perspire in a completely different way than when you play sports or because of the heat. In human skin there are 2 types of sweat glands: eccrines: that cool the body, prevent overheating and hardly smell; and apocrinewhich react to stressful situations.

Sweat secreted by the apocrine glands has a strong odor and a thick consistency due to its high protein and lipid content. If your palms and armpits sweat before a job interview or an important exam, this is completely normal. It means that your sympathetic nervous system works as it should.

However, if you sweat for no apparent reason, it’s worth checking your thyroid hormone level. Due to a malfunction of this gland, the nervous system sends out false signals and then excessive sweating begins.

2. Fishy smell due to accumulation of metabolic products

Sometimes the body smell is so strong that it affects your day to day life. For example, if a person suffers from trimethylaminuria, they emanate a strong fishy smell that cannot be eliminated with anything.

“Fish smell syndrome” (the name given to this disease) occurs in people with a strange genetic mutation. In healthy individuals, proteins break down and are eliminated through the intestines. And in patients with trimethylaminuria, some metabolic products remain in the body, accumulating and causing a terrible fishy smell.

Doctors still do not know how to completely cure this disease, therefore, they recommend that patients with such a syndrome follow a strict diet.

However, there is another disease that makes the body smell like fish: bacterial vaginosis. Due to the change in the microflora of the vagina, women complain about a specific smell. This state also requires a medical consultation.

3. The body smells like you’ve been physically working hard all day (even when you’re not)

In some situations, showering 3 times a day doesn’t save some from having a strong smell. Doctors call this state bromhidrosis. Such a situation occurs due to the breakdown of sweat gland secretions by bacteria and fungi, which can greatly complicate a person’s social life. This is an individual peculiarity of the body and there is no specific treatment.

Experts recommend using antibacterial soaps, antiseptic creams and diet adjustment. Products like onions, garlic and alcohol increase unpleasant body odors.

4. Breath gives off a sweet smell of stale apple

Not all diseases have an unpleasant smell. Sometimes the body begins to emit a sweet and somewhat fruity smell. And this is an alarming symptom.

In people with diabetes mellitus, the body does not have enough insulin, a hormone that helps glucose enter the body’s cells. When this hormone is lacking, the body, as fuel, does not break down glucose, but fats. This process causes the accumulation of ketones: they give the body and breath that sweet smell.

You should urgently see a doctor if the sweet body odor is combined with strong thirst, frequent urination, nausea or vomiting, and stomach pains.

5. Change in head smell and presence of dandruff

If you notice that your scalp and hair have acquired a strong smell, accompanied by itching and a lot of oil, it could be a symptom of seborrheic dermatitis.

This is a chronic skin disease associated with an increase in the amount of sebum and changes in microflora. The composition of sebum includes glycerides, wax esters and cholesterol which, when decomposed under the action of bacteria, acquire an unpleasant smell. And normally, that shouldn’t happen.

However, due to a weakened immune system, stress or even a hereditary predisposition, the skin starts to flake off and acquires an oily sheen. If this happens, it is worth visiting a specialist: he will prescribe anti-inflammatory and antifungal medications, as well as exfoliating products specific to your case.

6. Smell of acetone in the mouth

The human body and breath start to smell like acetone when our body has no carbohydrates. This state can occur in several cases:

A carbohydrate-deficient diet. Of course, with this diet, the pounds go away faster: the body stops receiving the usual pasta or bread and starts burning fat. A side effect of this process is a strong smell that persists throughout the diet. Changes in liver and kidney functions. With certain diseases, these organs do not deal well with the elimination of waste from the body. Microbes, bacteria and viruses. Some seasonal illnesses also cause the acetone smell, but immediately after recovery, it disappears.

7. The body “smells like cats”, despite good hygiene

With the help of ammonia, our body eliminates excess nitrogen in the blood. It can be excreted through breath, sweat and urine. If for some reason there is an excess of nitrogen in the body, this will also lead to “cat smell”.

The smell of ammonia in the mouth may indicate an infection with Helicobacter pylori (a bacterium responsible for gastritis and ulcer).

If the body smells of ammonia, it means that there is a lack of water or an excess of protein (even both at the same time). This effect can happen in the context of strong, heavy workouts and a high-protein diet. Some sports supplements provide an “ammonia side effect”.

However, the smell of ammonia can also reveal an inflammatory kidney disease. When the kidneys are not working at full capacity, they cannot filter out all the toxins, and these substances are eliminated through sweat. If it lasts for a while, you should consult a specialist.

8. Smell of vinegar after workouts

The vinegar smell can appear after intense physical exertion. The culprit for this is propanoic acid. Bacteria break down human sweat and, as a result, a chemically similar compound to vinegar is formed. Doctors claim that there is nothing to worry about with this body odor.

In this case, it is very useful to follow the basic rules of hygiene: regular bathing, deodorant and clean clothes.

Did you know that body odor can be caused by these reasons? How do you act when someone gives off a very strong and unpleasant smell?
