8 Differences between the versions of “Pantanal” that bring the plot closer to the modern audience

The 1990 soap opera Pantanal was an absolute milestone for Brazilian TV, but the 2022 version won high ratings. For Bruno Luperi, the author behind the remake, the reason is the debate on contemporary themes. Thus, those who followed the original soap opera and also the remake could find some differences here and there, although the production respects the classic format of Benedito Ruy Barbosa. But what about those who never watched the first version?

O awesome.club brought together some of the main differences between the 1990’s Pantanal and the 2022 remake, to remind classic fans and satisfy the curiosity of younger ones.

1. In the original version, Madeleine was a socialite, while in the new one, she has a much more modern job

Back in 1990, Madeleine lived by Ittala Nandi lived as a socialite, that is, a person who attends high society events and always appears in the social columns. Someone like Val Marchiori these days.

In 2022, Karine Teles lives a Madeleine who is a digital influencer, an occupation that makes more sense with current times. “I found that very interesting. The world has changed, 30 years ago people didn’t even have a cell phone. I thought it was smart to put Madeleine as an influencer”, she says. Additionally, for Karine, this new characterization of the character sparks the discussion about aesthetic standards in social networks.

2. Jove has undergone a major overhaul to reflect a more alternative youth than his original version

Played by Marcos Winter in 1990, the original Jove faced a prejudice from his father’s cowboys: he was the only one who ate barbecue on a plate and sat with his legs closed. The 2022 Jove, on the other hand, has a feature that further accentuated the culture shock in the barbecue scene: he is vegan. Despite having dropped out of college, he is focused on finding a profession, while the 1990s was sarcastic about work, saying he had a vocation for unemployment.

Also, the look among the Joves has its differences. The old character was more of a “playboy”, with a polo shirt, khaki pants and hair combed to the side, which at the time was called “mauricinho”. Meanwhile, Jesuíta Barbosa lives a Jove closer to the hipster style: messy and big hair, baggy clothes and shabby sneakers. On the other hand, the character of Juma remains unchanged, but played by Alanis Guillen in her own way.

3. Tenório still has a second family in São Paulo, but now of a different ethnicity

Tenório (Murilo Benício), in both versions of the soap opera, was always traveling to São Paulo on business when, in fact, he secretly kept a second family there. Zuleica, the matriarch of Tenório’s second family, was played by veteran Rosamaria Murtinho in 1990, and now Aline Borges has taken on the role. Therefore, Tenório’s family from São Paulo makes up a nucleus of black characters that did not exist in the original version.

4. Another change is noticeable in Zuleica, the character of Aline Borges

In addition to the physical difference, there is another detail that distances Zuleica from 2022 from its original 1990 version. In the remake, she knows that Tenório has another family, but “she has no problem being the second wife, she is very well resolved”, as the actress Aline Borges explains. She also adds that the 2022 Zuleica is a more modern and independent woman who does not need Tenório, but chose to continue the relationship because she loves him and for his support in one of the most difficult moments of her life.

5. The new version of the novel preferred to balance the rivalry between the sisters Madeleine and Irma

In the 1990 soap opera, the rivalry between the sisters Madeleine and Irma was memorable for being in love with the same man, but the actresses chose to take a different path in the remake. Karine Teles and Camila Morgado consider that female rivalry is too common a device in soap operas, so they decided to reduce the fights and increase the tone of humor a little. In this way, the new relationship between the sisters is much closer to “between slaps and kisses” than to pure rivalry.

6. Almir Sater returned to the cast of the remake but, this time, to play a character specially written for him

In 1990, singer Almir Sater played the guitar player Trindade — a role that is now under the responsibility of his son, Gabriel Sater. For the remake, Almir was invited to return to the cast, this time as Eugênio, a chalana driver, a character written especially for him. The chalaneiro, as well as the Velho do Rio, will have a mystical role in the plot, eliminating evil and purifying lives, as well as the waters he travels with his vessel.

7. Nalvinha from the 1990 soap opera got a new name and new perspectives in 2022, but it still causes problems

Played by Flávia Monteiro in the original version, Nalvinha was a girl who caused a lot of problems due to her unrequited love for Jove. In the remake, she got a new name, Nayara, and a slightly different story. A follower of Madeleine on social media, she wants to be an influencer too, and it was through the posts that she met and fell in love with Jove. The differences stop there, as Nalvinha’s vocation for confusion was inherited by Nayara.

8. The new version has benefited from using technology to capture previously more complicated images

This difference between the novels is purely technical, but it is worth mentioning. In the 1990’s production, aerial filming was rarer, since it was necessary to use balloons and airplanes. Already in 2022, this has become much easier with the use of drones, and aerial scenes appear more frequently. Another change from the previous version is in the animals. Before, real animals were used in various scenes, but today animals created by computer graphics are used.
