8 cool ideas to enjoy Mother’s Day with your mom

Mother’s Day is approaching and, with it, comes the same drama as always: what am I going to give as a gift? You’ve probably spent all your choices between clothes, shoes, accessories and cosmetics, and every year it gets harder to find a creative souvenir.

Plus, it’s quite possible that your mom already has all her cupboards cluttered with things — and the joy of receiving a new hand-painted china cup will fade once she realizes she doesn’t have room to store anything else.

Despite that, of course you don’t want Mother’s Day to go unnoticed, do you? After all, you know that you owe everything you are and have today to her, to the time she dedicated to you and your creation.

So, how about innovating this year’s gift and, instead of giving something material, proposing an activity that will generate a beautiful memory between you? See 8 ideas:

1. Take a cooking class

If you inherited your passion for cooking from your mother, or if you both really like one type of dish, how about taking a cooking class together? You can learn how to decorate cupcakes, prepare a typical dish from another country or even how to make a complete dinner for several guests.

If your city doesn’t offer any cooking schools, check with your favorite restaurants to see if you could take a tour of the kitchen with a demonstration of how to prepare some of the dishes on the menu.

2. Enjoy a day spa together

It may be many years since your mother stopped changing her diapers, but we’re betting she still hasn’t fully recovered from the tiredness of that time. So, how about giving her a day spa? And the best: you go along with her, so you can enjoy the day together!

You can choose a package with manicure, pedicure, reflexology, exfoliation, massage, immersion bath… Everything your mother (and you) is entitled to!

3. Learn something new together

Have you always wanted to learn sign language? Does your mother want to learn how to grow orchids? Or maybe you both love wine and would love to learn more about this topic?

So take advantage of Mother’s Day to dedicate yourself to a new common interest! You can take a workshop or enroll in a longer course, increasing the relationship between the two of you.

4. Do a chore your mom is avoiding

You know those tasks that we avoid doing at all costs, but need to be done? Taking the car to the service, organizing the photos from decades ago, leaving the clothes that need to be repaired at the seamstress… So this can become a gift for your mother.

Find something she needs to do but isn’t really into, and work it out for her. Her gift will be your most precious asset: her time.

5. Hire a professional photo shoot

It’s quite possible that by now your mom is on Facebook and spending hours and hours enjoying all the flower posts, good morning wishes, and professional photos from new born and wedding rehearsals. At these times, she beats that sadness when she looks at the blurry selfies she took with the front camera of her cell phone…

How about helping your mother succeed on social media? Hire a photographer to do a family shoot and take the time for him to make a book especially just for her! Your mom will love the rain of likes.

6. Participate in an activity she loves

Is your mother much more fit than you and does she run or take yoga classes? Or maybe she has an artistic talent and joins the painting club?

Whatever your mom’s hobby, a good gift idea for this day is to join her in this activity. Ask her to slow down if you can’t keep up, and make an effort to get to know her world more deeply.

7. Do volunteer work together

One way to connect, show your gratitude, and create a special memory is to choose a cause to contribute. It could be organizing animal adoption fairs, visiting cancer patients, or organizing a bazaar for an institution for the elderly.

Volunteering together will bring you and your mom closer and help you both realize how lucky you are to have each other. Who knows, maybe you adopt the cause for good and become regular contributors, right?

8. Travel just the two of you

It may not be possible to book an international trip with your mother, but spending a weekend at the beach or in the neighboring country town will be an excellent opportunity to strengthen ties, see different things and relax.

If a weekend is too long, you can still make a reservation at the best hotel in town for the two of you to be pampered with for a night, without interruptions of any kind.

More than a blouse, a shoe or a soap and moisturizer kit, you know what your mother most expects from you: your presence. A tight hug, a smack kiss and a few hours in her company will make her happier than any material gift.
