8 Cases in which fans did not agree with the actor’s choice for a role

On March 16, 2019, information began to circulate that the new Batman could be played by Robert Pattinson. Internet reactions were mostly negative, both against the studio and against the actor. Several petitions emerged with the intention of canceling the decision. On May 31st, rumors about Pattinson’s casting were confirmed. It is worth mentioning that this was not the first case of discontent with the cast shown by the public. Initially, none of the candidates pointed out as possible interpreters of Man-Bat satisfied the taste of the fans.

O awesome.club decided to sympathize with the actor and remember other cases in which fans were disappointed with the choice of a certain actor for a role.

1. Hugh Jackman / Wolverine

Today it’s even hard to believe, but we might not have seen Hugh Jackman in the role of the famous mutant. Both the studio and fans doubted the Australian actor’s capabilities at the time, and even Hugh’s wife was against the job.

In 2000, Dougray Scott was considered for the role of Wolverine (but chose to act in Mission Impossible 2🇧🇷 They also thought of Russell Crowe, who didn’t find the proposal interesting, but ended up nominating Jackman himself for the job.

The fans’ complaints were varied: age, height, the fact that the actor was not so famous… However, Jackman was approved, and he performed the role with praise for almost 17 years. The fact, incidentally, was recorded in the Book of Records as “the longest-running screen impersonation of a superhero”.

2. Tom Cruise / Lestat

Author Anne Rice herself initially disapproved of the choice of Tom Cruise for the role of Leslat in the film, which caused a wave of discontent for her candidacy, supported by many fans. She wanted the character to be lived by Julian Sands, from the movie warlock🇧🇷 Other names were also aired, such as Jeremy Irons and Daniel Day-Lewis.

The film’s producer, David Geffen, said the following in an interview with the magazine playboy🇧🇷 “I got a lot of letters from the Anne Rice fan club saying no they weren’t happy with Cruise playing Lestat. But the film is shot by the director, not the fans.”

Fortunately, the pressure didn’t make the director change his mind, as Cruise masterfully played the role. Something that Anne Rice herself would later recognize.

3. Heath Ledger / Joker

Heath Ledger won a posthumous Oscar for his role as the Joker in Batman the dark knight🇧🇷 To this day, it is only Academy Award awarded for a comic book-inspired film role🇧🇷 But only Christopher Nolan, the film’s director, saw Ledger’s talent. Fans, the studio and even the brother of the famous director considered that the actor did not have enough professional resources to act in a superhero movie. Many thought that the delicate and dramatic image of the characters previously lived by Ledger would prevent him from embodying the mad genius of the criminal world.

However, the first teaser trailer rocked fan opinion, and when the movie was released it was clear they were dead wrong.

4. Tobey Maguire / Spider-Man

The role of Spider-Man has already been lived by 3 actors in the cinema. But who struck the hearts of most fans was Tobey Maguire, seen as “a nice neighbor”. But today, few people remember the size of discontent caused by the choice of actor for the job. At the time, admirers of the superhero considered Maguire an interpreter only of roles of “nice nerds🇧🇷 doubting the actor would do well as a superhero.

Maguire said he was anxiously waiting for the public to change their minds. And that’s exactly what happened. By positively evaluating the work of director Sam Raimi, critics and audiences chose the trilogy with Maguire as the best representation of Spider-Man in theaters so far. Many fans even made a petition asking the actor to appear in other films in the Marvel universe for a small cameo.

5. Vivien Leigh / Scarlett O’Hara

Written by Margaret Mitchell, the book Gone with the Wind is considered a masterpiece of American literature. Therefore, the choice of actors for the film adaptation was closely followed by the public. When they cast Vivien Leigh, a little-known British actress, for the role of the Southern American, most people weren’t happy.

The producers tried to resolve the issue by stating that Vivien “had been brought up in England and that she had already been in a few films”. Still, the studio continued to receive numerous letters, in which fans spoke of insult to the “southern women” and “from the memory of liberation from British rule”🇧🇷

But when the film opened, all complaints disappeared. Vivien became much loved around the world and won her first Oscar at the age of 26.

6. Matt Damon / Jason Bourne

Before becoming a hitman with a turbulent past, actor Matt Damon only did papers dramatic🇧🇷 Therefore, fans of the book hesitated before choosing him to star in the film adaptation. Even the director of the first film, Doug Liman, initially considered the candidacies of Sylvester Stallone and Brad Pitt. However, when talking to Damon about the plot, Liman realized that he and the actor were on the same wavelength.

After the film’s premiere, even book fans stopped the actor in public places to ask him to film the sequel as soon as possible.

7. Robert Downey Jr. / Iron Man

Few people imagine another actor for the role of the “genius, billionaire, playboy and philanthropist”. But in 2006, when Marvel started producing the film, Robert Downey Jr. didn’t exactly have an enviable biography. Frequent problems with the law and illegal substances made the actor a very risky candidate in the opinion of the studio and many fans, who had been waiting since 1990 for the film adaptation of the comic book.

The film’s director, Jon Favreau, had to fight for Downey Jr. Thanks to that, fans spent 11 years seeing one of the most charismatic characters of our time in theaters.

8. Robert Pattinson / Edward Cullen

The story involving Batman is not the first case of discontent shown by fans in relation to Robert Pattinson. In an interview, the actor laughed when recalling the “unanimous disgust” that fans of the saga Twilight demonstrated when it was announced that he had been approved for the role.

As the line between love and hate is blurred, after three films Pattinson has become a fan favorite. He even confessed that, because of the paparazzi and the frenzy provoked by the public, he prefers to live in hotels than to buy a house.

Conclusion

Not all role choices are successful, that’s for sure. But stigmatizing the actor even before the film’s premiere makes no sense, as a well-chosen team can provide audiences with a unique movie theater experience.
