8 Best Ways to Clean a Sandwich Maker or Grill

You know when you have less than 10 minutes to eat a meal and you’re starving? It is at these times that we want to kiss the inventor of sandwiches and grills, which allow us to make sandwiches very quickly.

These appliances are really very practical in a kitchen, they can be used to prepare grilled meats and vegetables, as well as sandwiches – and they are the salvation of many young people who don’t know how to make other dishes.

Practicality, however, ends with the sandwich: when it comes time to clean the appliance, the task can be quite difficult depending on the type of food that was placed in the sandwich maker.

Cheese or meat fat and burnt bread crumbs often stick to the griddles and take a lot of work to remove. If you suffer from this problem, check out the tips we’ve separated to make cleaning your sandwich maker or grill easier.

Important: before starting, always check if the appliance manual recommends any cleaning procedure and never try to sanitize your appliance while it is still hot or plugged in.

1. Quick cleaning

Have you used the sandwich maker for a short time and it’s not that dirty, just a few crumbs of bread? Then just pass a soft cloth to remove these residues and absorb grease stains.

Remember: this method is useful for a quick clean up when you are about to use the sandwich maker again. If you are going to store the device, do a thorough cleaning to avoid the proliferation of microorganisms.

2. Warm water and detergent

To sanitize your sandwich maker, first unplug it and wait for it to cool down. Then, soak a soft cloth or sponge in a mixture of warm water and neutral detergent in a container and use it to scrub the grill until all residue is removed. Add more detergent to the water as needed.

Avoid soaking the cloth so as not to damage the electrical components of the sandwich maker. It is important to always choose a sponge or soft cloth so as not to scratch the non-stick.

3. Use a toothpick

If you are having difficulty removing any residue that has stuck to the plates, the tip is to line a toothpick with a soft cloth and use it to scrape the stuck piece until it is removed.

Never use knives and forks or other very hard and sharp objects for this, as you could damage the non-stick.

4. Old toothbrush

If you can’t clean the corners of the sandwich maker with the sponge, a tip is to use an old toothbrush to gently scrub these areas.

5. Olive oil tip

You know that old trick of heating a little oil in the pan to make cleaning easier? It also works with the sandwich maker or grill. To do this, drip a few drops of olive oil directly on the most stubborn residues and let the appliance heat up a little.

When the residues are more softened, turn off the sandwich maker and wait until the whole set cools down. Then remove the residue with a soft cloth or sponge.

6. Kitchen Degreaser

If your sandwich maker or grill is full of meat or cheese fat, a good tip is to clean it first with a cloth or paper towels, to remove the thickest dirt, and then drip a few drops of a degreaser.

With the help of a soft sponge, make continuous movements until all the fat is removed from the plates. At the end, use a cloth dampened with water to completely remove the degreaser, or you could end up contaminating your food.

7. The unbeatable white vinegar

Put some pure white vinegar in a spray bottle. Unplug the sandwich maker or grill and, while the appliance is still hot, sprinkle vinegar on the plates. Then put a cloth dampened with water and leave the sandwich maker closed for about 15 minutes.

When the residue is softened, use the same cloth to clean the device.

8. When the plates are removable

If your grill plates are removable, check the equipment manual to see if they are dishwasher safe. If they can’t (or if you don’t have this equipment), do the manual cleaning.

To do this, wait for the plates to cool, soak them in the sink with warm water and add a few drops of neutral detergent. Wait until all residue has softened, rinse and wipe with a soft cloth to remove all food residue.

It doesn’t hurt to reinforce: before cleaning your sandwich maker or grill, always remove the appliance from the socket and check if it is already cold so you don’t burn yourself.
